As much as people think that's true, you have to really wonder. When they give interviews, they just say they were going for something different instead of long epic songs that they did in their previous albumns. Nothing wrong with a band going their own way.

though i havent played them in years i still think that the only albums where they went wrong are the album they did with the orchestra( i still cant believe how poorly the music was arranged for that one) and the poorly written, or perhaps rushed, st. anger. load/reload were good for what they were but kirk hammetts lackluster/lazy input into those albums still annoys me. instead of playing weak 3rd rate blues licks he could of taken the more melodic if less blistering road ala soilwork post- predators portrait. and how the hell could EVERY member of the band agree to keep the disjointed, pieced together, poorly sung st anger album in its released form? someone had to have had problems with the tunes in the studio cause the songs were clearly unrealized.

What? They made 5 great albums and then turned to shit. I assume you have heard Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets? If not, why?

Metallica has tons of great songs on the first 5 cds. Every second of kill em all is classic material.

Enter sandman really is not a bad song, just was overplayed. Metallica's s/t has some heavy hitters

of wolf and man, through the never, sad but true, holier than thou, don't tread on me. Wherever I May Roam is a classic metallica song also. The Unforgiven and nothing else matters are great softer songs regardless what someone thinks.

...or maybe they just changed to play the kind of music that felt right to them at that time. most musicians would probably agree with me that you have to enjoy the music you make first and foremost. its not uncommon to see band members split because of differences involving musical direction. when you see metallica live you can tell that they enjoy playing newer songs live just as much as the old ones. the 90's style also gave hetfield a chance to try new things vocally.

i don't even listen to them anymore and i can still admit that they have a lot of songs that fucking destroy "Sandman." i always skipped that track anyway.

Perhaps the more interesting question would be - if you could only pick one Metallica song to listen to ever again, which would it be?

A: (For me) - Master of Puppets (track)
