A lot of people see Metallica as a one song band - Enter Sandman - but what's everyone's thoughts on them?

Which people, exactly, think that?

Bogus start to the thread aside, I think that they have been a band of generally diminishing returns. I enjoy all their first four albums, but to be honest after that they are either dull (Metalllica), gay (Load / Reload) or laughably poor (St. Anger).

My personal favourite album of theirs is Kill 'em All, followed pretty closely by ...And Justice For All, while I can't really decide between their Ride the Lightnin and Master of Puppets albums for third place.

These days, their current output is an utter irrelevance to me. It is said that they are very influential, which may be the case, but if the MTV ICONS show proved anything, it proved that "influence" can be a double edged sword indeed.

Some people I know only like Enter Sandman... poor them. Anyway I must agree about Load/Reload, poor albums, and St.Anger... the less said the better.

They did manage to put on a brilliant show at Download this year, playing their older music and played a better show because of it.

Unfortunatly, Metallica tried very hard to evolve their music, but tried too hard and lost a lot of fans because of it. Such a waste.

when i last heard them (around 2004 or so) they totally sucked. it was like watching a bunch of old muppets play covers of a heavy rock band.

It's not so much their shift to shit music as their rockstar attitude and disregard of former-fan's loyalty that irritates me.

This argument is a million years old, and the thread creator is ignorant as all fuck though.

I saw them in 2003 and they kicked ass ... Until they decided to play some of their new music. I don't like their new music as much cause they took out what they thought was "unecessary" and "boring the crowd" when it was actually the stuff that made the songs.

Too bad.

Like most people who have an iota of knowledge about metal i enjoy their first 4 albums emmensly, the rest suck a fair bit. st anger had alot of potential but sounded shit and the songs were boring and repetative for the better part.

They have an arrogance about them, or at least used to, particually in the shit period, which annoys me, most of their fans are utter cunts as well, which equally pisses me off

edit - to answer your question, they certainly arent a one song band, their first 4 were true metal, after that it gets a bit hazey

This post covered me completely.

And as the one song thing… most of the not true fans don’t concentrate that much on ES as much they do on Nothing Else Matters. All the sentimental people who think that this is the only song worth mentioning

It's just an absurdity for this thread to exist.
The same is about this question "Metallica - One song band or true metal band?".

Remeber, the band was already doing platinum sales with ...And Justice For All without the benefit of radio airplay or MTV. There was a lot of hard work that went into that band to get them to that point.

Once they started making videos, their exposure was increased. Perhaps it was the fame that did them in, but this is not a "one song band," simply because the mainstream populace caught on because of Enter Sandman and making Metallica a diamond-selling (10 million+ copies sold) album.

The first 5 albums were great, after that they stepped a bit away from the oldschool metal thing imho...
The first four, not the first five. I hardly consider the black album great. That was when they really changed their sound to accomodate mainstream listeners.
