I know these aren't everyone's favourites here, but as Metallica played really good, I mean REALLY good and there's a funny(?) story about slipknot, I figured I'd post a short review here....

The venue: a big football (or soccer, if you really think football was invented in America :)) stadium. Over 50.000 people present. Awfully hot, but I was in the second or in the front row from the beginning till the end.

VADER- Unfortunately they were allowed to play only for 20 minutes, which sucked big time. A solid performance, but the sound wasn't too good (quiet guitars and vocals, loud drums) and thus the music lacked power. 20 min. of pleasant headbanging. Highlights: "Wings", "Carnal".

SHITKNOT- At first I need to stress that I'm not the kinda guy who interrupts a band he doesn't like during their performance, because I tolerate and respect others' beliefs and musical tastes. I admit I was prejudiced, because I had been familiar with their music, which I absolutely hated and couldn't understand, but I'd said to myself that I would not judge or condemn them until I see them live.
So after waiting for a really long time 5 masked "gentlemen" appeared and started playing. Some of the audience went crazy (mostly nu-metal kids, but not only, which surprised me a bit)- the front rows were doing the devil horns, screaming and headbanging. Most of the slipknot-haters were lurking in the middle rows. Luckily me and my friend have been standing beside some foreign guys who definitely weren't into Slipknot. We all had our hair tied and weren't moving at all, being both: bored and disgusted with this "show". There's nine of "The Numbers" and only one of them could be classified as a musician- the drummer's pretty good (I mean the REAL drummer, 'cause they have three "drum sets"). Me and my friend (who's a singer and a guitar player) had a really good time laughing while watching the two "virtuosos" on the guitars- they looked like they'd been playing for not more than a year and one of them had problems with spitting, 'cause he had a mask with a zip-fastener. Anyway, what a bunch of senseless, chaotic noise! The other two "drummers" were acting like monkeys- jumping on their sets, hitting them with baseball bats, all the band members would spit at each other...and at the audience- to show us how "evil" they are, I guess. Everyone was headbanging like if they were crazy, but I guess they should have rather focused on playing, as they had huge problems with that. Pathetic and hokum are the first two words that come to my mind when I think of this "music" and their behaviour. This was all about "jump da fuck up", "gimme 555, gimme 666" and "look how evil we are"- really embarassing. But still many people were digging it...:puke: :yuk:

THE FUNNY STORY ABOUT SHITKNOT- like I said we weren't digging the show, but weren't interrupting. We would only scream (ok, growl) "NO!" whenever the vocalist would ask whether we'd like to hear another song (we were just honestly expressing our minds). We were loud so they noticed us.
But things started to develop when one of the clowns- a fat drummer number 6 spat directly at us and "ordered" us to bang our heads- we found that pretty offensive and rude (not funny at all) and one of the foreign guys that stood beside me (from Czech Rep. or Lithuania, I presume) spat back, but obviously missed as the stage was pretty high. The clown started to laugh, so we just gave him the finger. He did the same, so we just shouted "fuck you, asshole" (my friend did it REALLY loud and everyone heard it) then took a microphone and pretended it was a penis (sic!) and started acting like if he was masturbating and then put this into his mouth and then pointed at us... meaning that we could do this to him.
I was visibly pointing at my watch (with my arms high in the air) and yawn with mouth open wide to show him how much we're bored with this spectacle. One of the guys started screaming how much slipknot sucks and that it's not music and that they should go home etc. That really pissed the fucker off- he took a bottle of mineral water and threw at us with full force (not the way you usually throw mineral waters to the audience), but missed. That in turn pissed us off- we tried to pick the bottle up and cast it back, but one of the security guards took it away from us. He started to laugh and started to show us that he'll cut our throats, will find us after the gig and kick our asses and stuff. We "invited" him to the snake pit. He was so pissed that he would only play on and off- occassionally. He was focused on the 4 of us all the time.He took another bottle and threw- this one hit me in the arm- I picked it up and handed to the guy who was closer to that clown and he threw it, but missed and the security guard yelled at him and said that if we don't stop he'll wforce us to leave. We all wanted to see Metallica, so we calmed down a little bit. Meanwhile "our" clown disappered....and appeared under the stage by the barriers....with four personal guards (what a pussy!) and "climbed" it, which scared one of the guys, who stepped back and made some room for him to get into the pit, but he wouldn't dare- he only moved his head towards my friend and looked itno his eyes- his round nose was touching my friends nose- he thought he could scare him, but my friend had a truly bored face, remained stoic and didn't move an inch. The clown then looked at me, his angry eyes were full of fear, I couldn't be stoic- I just bursted into laughter... but he didn't provoke me to punch him (even though people from the back were encouraging me to do so). We all were waiting for a strike with our fists clenched, 'cause we knew that if we started, the guards would simply kill us. But the coward went away.
They played a couple more songs, he poured some water at us, showed us the middle finger and the "performance" was finally over.

I know that's a long story and I apologise for boring you, but I just thought I'd share, because it was the first time I met "musicians" that were such assholes. The guy really lost his temper, because someone dared not to worship him and his little band. I was really surprised. I hadn't expected a good show from slipknot, but I wasn't prepared for being offended or spat on.

finally...

METALLICA- the whole non-music envelope of the show (fragments of the movie "the good, the bad and the ugly", framents of "full-metal jacket, the visual and sound effects) were really great. So was the setlist- they bagun with Blackened, then Fuel, The Four Horsemen (!). The rest not in order:
Fade To Black- really great
Sad But True, Enter Sandman, Wherever I may Roam- obviously- but it was pretty good.
Frantic and St.Anger- only two songs off the last record.
One- with great fire and shooting effects at the beggining.
Battery and Master Of Puppets (Master simply killed!).
King Nothing- I don't like Load, but I was really fond of the way they played this song
Creeping Death- who's seen them live knows how good it was. Definitely a highlight
Then they got off the stage, but came back and James said they'd play one more "fast or slow?". "FAAAAAAST!". "Ok, you wanted it"....and they played "Dyers Eve"- the crowd was nuts. They were about to go, but we didn't want to let them, so James asked "who's got Kill'em All?"...and we all know what was played.
To sum up- a really good show (I was standing oin front of Kirk:worship: )- very metal (no "baby") and intense (but in a different way than slipknot, of course). I was surprised that even though James can't sing all the tunes like he could and Lars has problems with playing some of the faster stuff, they still kick much ass....live of course, 'cause I'm the last one to praise "St. Anger"..

Pardon all the mistakes and the incoherent style of this review, but I was in a hurry and just thought I'd share my feelings with The Legions.

Ps. People's response to my "souls of black" t-shirt was amazingly positive :)

I was really blown away by their behaviour, great contact with the audience, energy and the crowd response- everybody was singing every song...shit, I even sang along to Nothing Else Matters!

My only question is: Why didn't you punch that slipknot fucker?
I wish I had been there to see Metallica even though their prime is over since fifteen years... but I just got a live vid from '83 which at least compensates that a bit!

I know that's a long story and I apologise for boring you
Why are you apologizing? You didn't bore me one bit! There's this guy in one of my computer classes that LOVES Slipknot. I should show him this thread. ;)

You think Slipknot sucks? In my town there's this local band called "Beyond Theropy" (cheesy name) that's a really big Slipknot ripoff and they are a alot worse! (yes, it is possible) They made a guest appearance on the University's station, and it was so horrible. Their music was heavy and angry, but it wasn't very good. In fact, wasn't good at all. So yeah, the thing that's worse than Slipknot is when bands try to be like Slipknot, where their aspiration is to be just like them, where their one goal in life is to be the next Slipknot, where -ok, I bet you get what I'm saying.

they are the most arrogant fuckers around, can you believe they were in metal maniacs magazinne saying that they were the best and most hardworking "metal" band.

Somebody shold write that stupid magazine (stupid since they let those bastards in) and say, if this is mallcore maniacs then specify it in the cover!!!!!!

Grindcore will demolish those arrogant pop freaks

Thanks for posting that. I hear you about Metallica. Everytime they are in town, I'm there. I am still a huge fan, didn't like St. Anger. They always play their old faster tunes. There is something about Nothing Else Matters. In 98, Irivine Meadows, 2nd Row Center, James on stool, not plugged in (from what I remember)....sounded so beautiful. Sang with true feelings and emotions. That was the year that they toured with Jerry Cantrell if I remember correctly. Great concert all in all. Glad to hear that they are still playing fans favorites.

Damn dude, that's a cool story. I knew Slipknot were shitty musicians, but I didn't know they (or at least one of them) were such assholes as well. Good shit showing that fucker up...shame you didn't get to teach him a lesson in violence.

Metallica still rules live, indeed. Glad you enjoyed it.

My only question is: Why didn't you punch that slipknot fucker?
The answer is very simple: I wanted to see Metallica and I was 100% sure that if I only touched that fucker, the guards would grab me by my hair and "convoy" me to the nearest PD (without stopping to beat me...but that's a detail

shame you didn't get to teach him a lesson in violence
Now, if he had only touched me or one of those two guys, I wouldn't hestitate to kick his ass, but that wimp was there to provoke us and would then have his nannies fight for him. I really wish I had had the chance, guys... but I'm still glad I could laugh at his face....I mean, mask

That's quite miserable, I admit. It's not theshitty music that I find so pathetic, but this lack of mnners, arrogance and disrespectful behaviour that surprised me and made me angry, though. I bet (hope?) those clone-bands don't copy that Do they? However, you'd be really surprised how many people, who were there, would be rapturous if that "musician" spat at them...
Reading the reviews the day after made me laugh- most of them were saying how tight slipknot's playing was and what a great show they made (stage behaviour-wise)/ Perhaps I attended a different gig? (I surely wasn't drunk)

Well, they are hardworking...in a way. They're doing their best to "punish" those who think they suck...plus they're headbanging a lot, I mean A LOT- too bad they can't headbang and play at the same time

Glad to hear that they are still playing fans favorites
I'm pretty sure they realise that "St.Anger" is not their best record. Too bad they're only playing the goods songs and lost the ability to write them...

Thanks for the review. I commend your firm but intelligent posture regarding the assholes of Shitknot. Is time the intelligence audience show the crappy bands they are not welcome, if they don't know how to play or behave.
I'm glad no of you get hurt or missed the show because of the security goons, that creep was a definitive coward.

I enjoy the post a lot, very detailed and clever. Hope many more will come.

I've heard a rather new live recording of Dyer's Eve, recorded in France I believe and included on the latest single (together with 7 orther live songs) and I have NEVER heard worse butchery of a kickass song. Larscan't do the double bass, james' singing is crappy, he sounds like he doesn't care and he forgets the lyrics and so on.

Thanks for your support. I agree that we should do something to teach them how to behave, although I think we were in minority during that show (at least in the front rows) and therefore I doubt if we have the right to show them they're not welcome in a particular place- we can only speak for ourselves. I won't remain silent, because others disagree with me, but most people seemed to accept and even be fond of such behaviour during the "show".
The biggest complaint that I have (and I should have started my review with) goes to someone who came upon the idea of having slipknot open for metallica. They still drag very different audiences to their shows- despite the fact that many nu-metallers (yes, I still claim slipknot is a part of the nu-metal wave) are into metallica. Conflicts and "misunderstandings" are what one might have expected from such an exotic bill. I guess most metalheads and regular, self-respecting and quite intelligent people don't like to be offended and don't feel honoured when someone spits on them or gives them a finger- if that happens, they're ready to fight back- even against the biggest "star". But probably the rest of the audience (rebelious teenagers, blind fan-boys, people with some mental problems etc.) find this positive and enjoy it. Sometimes I feel like if some people lived in a different world.
It's not even about the music, 'cause I pretty much had known what to expect and no one forced me to stand in the front row and listen to it (I could have gone and have a beer- but didn't want to lose my position). And I know some people like it- they have the right (even though I think this music=shit), but I don't want to get involved within their stupid games (that's something I couldn't have forseen)... and defiance was a natural reaction for me....but perhaps I could have expected something like this from people who wear masks to be more scary and have three drumsets in order to make more senseless noise- to cover up for the lack of talent; perhaps it's me who's different and that's where music and entertainment is heading these days?

Larscan't do the double bass, james' singing is crappy, he sounds like he doesn't care and he forgets the lyrics and so on.
I've even seen a video where some kids visited metallica in their studio (this was some kind of a prize or something) and metallica was playing their favourite tunes. One of the boys (who was a drummer) asked them to play "Dyers Eve" and Lars couldn't play that intro (he tried 4 times but it was too hard). Everyone was laughing at him and the boy took his place and played it like if it was him who had written the song.
I don't say Metallica was tight that night- although they were close- it was mostly about the atmosphere, great feeling, passion and joy. To be honest, I couldn't hear much of James' singing (because of the 50.000 people that were "helping" him)- he didn't seem to forget much of the lyrics, though. Still, you have to forgive him- I'm surprised that he still wants to sing those old songs after he's become a new, re-habed man :)

Am I the only one who's super pissed to have missed Dyer's Eve??????

The played it entirely?
Not at all Larf03, I'm with you on that one. I actually missed the boat on that one too. They played that song for the FIRST time , the whole song, here in LA @ the Forum last time they were here a few months back. I should have went. I was pissed cause everytime I've seen them before they do the same ol' boring Seek and Destroy sing-a-long. I too still like Metallica, but just can't stand their new material.
