MFN close down

Damn, everything is closing down these days. Whilst this type of thing tends to happen in the industry, I certainly hope it doesn't have much bearing on the quality artists that were signed under MFN.

God, i hope they dont sign to century media, or nuclear blast or metal blade or any label like that. I think a label like delerium or mellotronen would do them some good, but i dont know if the necessary funding would be there. Opeth is a band which needs all of their artistic freedom to survive.

Martin Hooker sold MFN to Zomba a few years ago for a rather large sum of money. Then Zomba got sold to BMG. BMG are the ones who pulled the plug on MFN.

All the major labels are dropping bands and things like this left right and centre at the moment.

You know, other than that DVD, how did MFN limit Opeth's artistic freedom? Everyone makes such a big freaking deal over lamentations not having any old shit on it.......who cares?! Yeah, it sucks, but I don't see how this warrants all the "supression of artistic freedom by MFN and Steven Wilson" talk. Cause then all this gets turned into "Opeth sold out!!! Orchid rules!!!" type threads, and if I see another one of those, than I may just burst into tears and cry myself to sleep tonight.

Quite supprising to hear that. Still, I dont think Opeth are going to have any problems trying to find a label... I'd just hope that they sign with someone decent.

in all my eternal ignorance i mistakenly started another thread on this topic and moonlapse pointed me in the right direction.
So i hope we hear from the band soon, and i hope this doesnt affect the new recording sessions.
The same thind happened to Elektra i beleive. So im going to bet that BMG will use the same excuse that downloading is killing their profits and MFN just couldnt hack it anymore. There has really only been one in depth study on the real effects of "piracy" and it was done very recently by a team of harvard researchers that concluded downloading is not the cause of the industry's woes right now.
Personally i'd bet anything it has more to do with shitty radio and lack of exposure for any decent bands who would have a huge audience if people just heard them.
I know not everyone is into the death vocals but if Opeth were on the radio they'd gain a ton of new fans. I realize this isnt what they want necessarily but the labels would certainly benifit.
So in short, knock down your local Clear Channel tower.

Mr. Niel is absolutely right. Opeth has done exactly what they've wanted to do on MFN. As many of you remember, Opeth never really wanted to put out a live dvd, so I guess to the band it doesn't really matter that there wasn't pre-MFN stuff on it. So what if it was just the last 3 albums, at least we have some live Opeth to watch. i just dislike MFN because they give much more promotional backing towards bands that will make them more money (ie Opeth) and leave other awesome bands (Anathema) high and dry. A Natural Disaster has been out for over half of year and I have seen barely anything about it, while the last few Opeth efforts have been much more prevalent as far as advertising and such.... ok, i'm done...
