MFN close down

while the last few Opeth efforts have been much more prevalent as far as advertising and such.... ok, i'm done...

I was just thinking about this thread before I signed on and thinking just about that. If it wasn't for MFN, the guys probably wouldn't be making enough to live off of their music as they do now. MFN gave them the promotion they needed for their fanbase to increase loads, which of course leads to more sales of their works. Before MFN (and KOCH), they didn't have that.

MFN has benn nothing but good for Opeth. It is really a shame that a great label (yes I said great) is being shut down by BMG. Mike and the band believe it or not liked MFN. They did not steer or influence the music direction one bit. They just supplied better equipment to record on, and spent what money they could on promotion. You all realize that Opeth are getting older now, so they will probably not make an Orchid II.. People's styles change with age. Anyway, I would like to hear from the band on this matter..

Thats a lie. Yes I dont think they will make an Orchid II but just because people are getting old dosent mean that their music will change. But Opeth´s music did :ill:

Well from what Mikael has told us here, it will certainly be unique. Useage of gregorian chants and keyboards... it certainly sounds like the Damnation experiment has notched Opeth into a certain direction. I think this constant developing and learning is very good for the band. And fuck man, if Mikael is excited about the new album, then so am I!

I read somewhere that Mike maybe would make something that sounded like Black Metal. Has anyone heard something about that? Or maybe was it just a dream.

It won't be black metal in the traditional sense - the inclusion of Steve Wilson as a producer should have at least told you that much. The sound that is shaping up now is apparently alike to Celtic Frost except with more ambience.

Actually, I think Blabbermouth could be wrong.. didn't Lee say that Zomba sold MFN to BMG a couple of years ago? In that case, I guess they'll all be folded into BMG (yeah, like Lee said)

Dudes, my opinion: Opeth with MFN was a shit. Why?

The DVD thing. Why many bands release dvds and they can play old material from other labels and Opeth couldn't? It's the contract? Ok, I know Opeth has to follow it.
Look, don't you think guys that Opeth could come to MFN and say "Ok MFN, if you don't let us play old material, I'll not authorize this DVD, you won't release it"?
But Opeth just agreeded passively with all this. What can I conclude? 1)Opeth were more interested on dvd sales, which I can understand; 2) MFN order and Opeth obey, which is shit.
If the problem was paying rights for other label in order to let the band play old songs, don't you think the dvd release or even Opeth's catalogue with MFN wouldn't pay for that? As far as I know, Opeth has good sales. MFN only wanted to promote their catalogue, pure business.
Well, that is it.

I recall that old DVD conversation Ectoplasma. I also recall it not going down too well with the forumers. Honestly, if that's the only reason you have against MFN then you only support the fact that they have been a great support for Opeth. They are, after all, the reason that many of us know about the band. Opeth has been able to do much more through them than they have in past times. So I think pros outweigh the cons here.

Agreed.

Ectoplasma,

Just because Opeth complied with the requirements of the DVD didnt mean they didnt care that they couldnt play older material...but its not worth breaking a contract over, or other such issues. Not to mention a DVD with only MFN stuff isnt the end of the world anyway, and certainly still worth doing regardless...its all Opeth material on it...old or new, and im sure the band doesnt really care...theyre playing their own songs and will have a good time doing them regardless which ones they are. It seems like YOU are the one who really has the issue with them not having older material on the dvd.
