MFN close down

Ectoplasma,

Just because Opeth complied with the requirements of the DVD didnt mean they didnt care that they couldnt play older material...but its not worth breaking a contract over, or other such issues. Not to mention a DVD with only MFN stuff isnt the end of the world anyway, and certainly still worth doing regardless...its all Opeth material on it...old or new, and im sure the band doesnt really care...theyre playing their own songs and will have a good time doing them regardless which ones they are. It seems like YOU are the one who really has the issue with them not having older material on the dvd.

Again, I go with what I said earlier, but also want to add that the DVD was worthwhile just for the documentary alone.

wtf? why are ppl here trying to excuse MFN´s behaviour on the Lamantations matter. MFN are greedy sons of bitches who don´t care about nothing but sales. Why do you guys think Lamentations features an entire Damnation set, and why is it In my time of need you hear in the menu of the dvd. It´s simply sales. And whoever said Opeth didn´t care about which songs they played obviously is wrong since Mikael stated that it was a bit fucked up only playing from the last three albums. What Mikael also said was that they didn´t have the energy to argue with MFN since they where also touring and stuff.
When I said Opeth would go back to Candlelight Records it was a joke, since I know Opeth are too big for that now. BUT what I do hope is that Opeth signs to a less greedy record label who will let them do their thing, and eventually get good sales, rather than some greedy bastards who wanna see sales right away.

I know record companies need to make money in the long run. MFN was only interested in making money in the short run and thus they didn´t give any credit to the band IMO. That´s what I´m critizising. And besides I think it is outrageous that a record company tries to determin the content of a DVD. Not all record companies work that way (at least I hope not).

Actually, I think Blabbermouth could be wrong.. didn't Lee say that Zomba sold MFN to BMG a couple of years ago? In that case, I guess they'll all be folded into BMG (yeah, like Lee said)
No, I said Zomba bought MFN, and now BMG bought Zomba. :)

Oh, and Zomba started as a label, but built a publishing empire since. BMG bought Zomba for 1.2 BILLION pounds, making Zomba's former owner one of the UK's richest men overnight.

BMG bought Zomba for the catalogue library only. I guess they're taking a gamble on the fact that folks will be downloading individual songs from the net rather than buying CDs in the future (or something). Since Zomba owned probably the biggest collection of songs outside of the majors (seems daft not to call Zomba a major, but they weren't officially classified as one), BMG obviously thought spending all that money was worth it.

The labels weren't in those plans (I'm not sure who else they owned. I doubt MFN are the only casualty) but I'm guessing they'll hang on to Jive (Britanny Spears, etc).

MFN were much better to Opeth than Candlelight were anyway. They were fuckers, they wouldn't even fund an Opeth tour, which is why there were hardly an Opeth gigs prior to BWP. They've gotten tons of promotion in recent years, and much of the credit for that has to go to MFN, regardless of whether theyre a bunch of corporate cocksuckers or not.

Nice to see there's always morons out there who feel the need to speak out on something they know nothing about.

I paid for Opeth to come to the UK on three seperate occasions (one time in support of Morbid Angel for three shows), and I also paid £6000 for the band to support Cradle Of Filth on a European tour (about 25 dates). At this point Opeth weren't big enough to headline shows (as one of the shows in Manchester proved, with about 20-25 paying customers..) so I had to put my hand in my pocket to make these things happen.

By the time the band signed to MFN they were worthy of headline status so had no need to ask for tour support from MFN. Opeth have a good manager and a good booking agent and can now happily tour without having to ask the label for help. All MFN had to do was watch the sales roll in.

God, i hope they dont sign to century media, or nuclear blast or metal blade or any label like that. I think a label like delerium or mellotronen would do them some good, but i dont know if the necessary funding would be there. Opeth is a band which needs all of their artistic freedom to survive.

whats wrong with metal blade or nuclear blast? metal blade, when they signed King's X, was supposed to have given them as much space as they wanted, they would probably do the same for Opeth? though i guess Nuclear Blast would suck, as they're the ones trying to sell the unfinished Control Denied album.
