Midi Bass Question

Do you any of you do midi bass with the actual bass playing (have a bass synth along with the actual playing)? What would be the best way to do this...I was thinking along the lines of playing the bass then using melodyne to switch the bass file to midi...I tried this but melodyne does not provide the correct tuning you still have to adjust timings and notes

Is there anything simpler? Should I attach a midi pickup to my bass or is there a better program that can take a bass wav and convert to midi to match the timing and notes pretty good?

I would maybe do midi for the low end only.. I'm thinking about intonation issues in this case.. Without trying it yet, I would try a hipass on the bass at 80-100hz and a lowpass on the midibass to make them blend.. But no, I wouldn't double the bass with a programmed bass..
