I'm mixing a full length for a spanish death metal band, they're signed to the same label I did a thrash metal album for this summer...

They wanted all the drums natural but the kick, so my options are pretty reduced to the crappy snare and ok toms they recorded. They also don't want me to quantize the drums in any way, so they edited them before sending to me...

The guitar tracks were total crap, so I used the DI's with the x30 beta plugin.

The bass is actual mic'ed Ampeg SVT, so it sounds ok, but I'd prefer to have the DI's and use POD Farm instead, but whatever...

How does it sound for this kind of music? Again, this is a rough mix done in 2h (counting in the time I spent discarding takes, trying out sounds, etc...)

Cheers!

brootal dude! the snare is as you sad kind of hmm...but somehow it fits the mix...could use more bottom maybe, sounds quite thin
the kick is nice! could u share that one?
i think it will work out fine...the snare is the only thing i could say something about...the rest is blasting imo!

yeah vocals are pretty bad, but simply cause the vocalist sucks, not your fault hahaha

Note: I'm a super fan of all kinds of death metal and extreme metal, I wouldn't even consider this "brutal" death metal

Well, to be honest I don't like anything harder than Behemoth  and only like Behemoth because they're top notch, but the music style is not my cup of tea, so for my taste this is too much hence why I label this as brutal :D

OT: How're you now Dani? I mean about being in Spain now and all of that...

I can't see what's the problem with the vocals. The vocalist doesn't suck, you guys simply don't like his style. Period.

Not that I particularily like it or that song, it's actually very repetitive. The mix sounds good, bands like that can't really sound much better than this :)

since when was sounding like a barnyard animal in death metal anything more than a silly fad that only 14 year olds find cool?

different styles aren't just something you "find cool"... if that's how you see music, you've got it all wrong mate

Jesus christ, how has no one commented on the enormousness of the bass? This sounds absolutely fucking enormous Erik, and the kick is insane too - the vocals are seriously lol-worthy, NO ONE can tell me those lyrics in the second section (with the wall of double bass) are anything but REE REEE, REEREE REEEEEEE :lol: And I would call this deathcore personally. But yeah, let's see - the mix is massive, but maybe just a bit out of control IMO; I can imagine it farting out ridiculously on lesser speakers - I can't say I'm all that crazy about the guitars, they're very dirty and a bit scratchy sounding, and it's hard to define much pitch from them (but they fit quite well).

Is there any stereo widening or something going on here dude? I'm just trying to figure out how it sounds so massive (I guess a big part of it is that bass, sweet jesus  ). Oh yeah, and the snare is a bit nasty sounding, but I only notice it when I pay attention to it (meaning, it doesn't stand out annoyingly or anything). Overall badass man, 90-95% there I'd say!

The kick is very loud. The guitars are kinda buried in the mix because of the drums. The guitars could come up a bit also.

I agree with some of Marcus' points. The bass is big but.. too big and a bit uncontrolled. It just sounds like a blur to me.Snare is also sticking out really weirdly. Its too bright, and the kick is too fat in comparison. Guitars could come up a touch.
