After playing around and having fun with tracks from other forum members around here (great for mixing experience), I thought it was time to give some tracks too. This song is from a project I'm doing together with a singer/bassplayer. I've been working on the mix for the songs for quite some time myself, and I thought it was cool to see what you guys would do with it. The guitar tracks aren't perfect because they're testing tracks, with not quite new strings and not perfect playing. But I think they're good enough to have some fun with hehe. Oh, there's no lead guitars yet. Vocals are done though (and included).

The tempo for the song is 180, and the drums file is done for Superior Drummer 2.

Here you go:

The tracks:

The drums without buss processing, for those that can't or don't want to do midi drums:

My latest mix:

And for those who want to experiment with it, impulses from my cab miced as in some later reamped tracks (24Bit):

New impulses from setup with 2 cabs:

And a mix I tried with the impulses...

Comments on the mix are also very welcome. :goggly:

Your files are offline dude.

Must be Dropbox then, but I just checked and they're still downloadable.

*edit*

To make sure I uploaded them again, with new names (# symbol removed). I remember having problems with that in the past sometimes. Thanks for mentioning it, I hope they work now.

Here's my try :)

Guitars Are Lecto > Fredman 1on-preshigh impulses > EQ > limiter on buss
Bass is 2 tracks 1: DI > EQ > Compressor 2: Waves Guitar Amp Mono > EQ > limiter on buss

Vocals are compressed to fuck and back, and also gritted up with Guitar Rig 4 and some EQ

Drums are SD2.0 Metal Foundry set to multichannel with various bits of processing and humanized MIDI

Master chain: C1 > S1 > C4 > Q4 > Q1 > L2

Thanks Shaggysi0, sounds interesting, really different approach. The humanizing on the drums is quite extreme though, really alot of volume differences. For the rest the balance of the mix is ok, considering the DI's are not easy to work with (fingerstyle fretless bass and Jem as rhythm guitar, only downtuned to D).

Let's go with a quick mix. Warning! Low frecuencies content!

Ah, I thought this thread died a slow dead already. :)

Thanks for the mix, indeed it's got a lot of low end, but I like the vibe of your mix. Guitars have an interesting chainsaw vibe to it, sounds cool. The vocals sound really great! Care to explain what you did to them?

Guitars are behringer um100 into boss hm-2 and then run through nebula cab simulation with a lot of eq.
Vocals are only rvox, req6 with 200hz filter, increasing 400 and 1000 hz with medium Q, and again rvox. Then send a bit of vocals to an auxiliar bus with lexicon pantheon reverb, big room.
At the moment, drums are metal foundry mixed with kick and snare samples from a Roland TD-10. I want to test the mix with NI Abbey Road 80's.

Cool man, I already wondered how you got that hm-2 type chainsaw sound. But I see, only one way a real hm-2 hehehe, nice one. Thanks for the info on the vocs. I used Rcomp, and also FerricTDS from Bootsy for a little saturation/grind. Still in doubt if I should use that saturator. Yours sound clearer and that's nice. Drums sound nice too, I wouldn't have guessed it's Metal Foundry (I use that too), nice snare. And you're a Nebula user too I see, I really like it but I use it for tape emulator mainly (mainly R2R on cymbals and MLC from AlexB on various busses). And yes, the Abbey Road 80's would be cool I think.

Nice too see totally different views on this mix, I wish more would like to give it a try hehehe. :)

V2 with abbey road OH's and Alesis D4 toms. Mainly the same, but a bit more clear and wide sounding.

Yes this version has nicer toms and clearer overheads. But the low end is still dominating very much, especially on the faster kickdrum parts. On slower parts it sounds more in control. It's also the bass guitar, but that one sounds already heavy on itsself. Maybe highpassing those elements a bit would help. Otherwise it sounds nice to me.

Very nice mix mickrich, super heavy sounding. Incredible how everything sounds very full/thick, but still everything can be clearly heard. I like it alot.

Btw FF666, on my Mp3 player your mix sounds super nice and fat. Are you mixing on headphones maybe?

Yes I'm using audio technica ath-m40fs :D Sometimes I check it through M-Audio BX5A monitors but they are not really good.

I updated the second mix with less low frecuencies in kick and bass and excited the highs a bit.

Yes much better balance in the low frequencies, sounds alot more in control now. The highs are maybe a tad too harsh now (cymbals). Since you're a Nebula user, you could try to use the 'Tape Warm Bus' on the overheads/hihats sometimes (or on other mixes you're doing). It really helps me to get warm but yet clear sounding cymbals. I got the R2R pack from CDSoundMaster, which includes a shitload of tape impulses, I keep going back to that. When you excite the highs of the whole mix, it's also more in control then. Well, it's all personal preference of course. For the rest I like the mix, it's different. :)

Oh, and a question, you mind telling what cab impulses you're using on Nebula? Are they selfmade? They sound good.

Thank you sinquestsound, nice mix. Maybe a bit too loud snare (for the blast parts), and alot of distortion on the bass but I like it. It's all personal preference of course. :)
