I have a drummer coming into my place and he uses cowbell in a few songs. Do you guys ever close mic cowbell? Do you get enough of it from the OH's? What mics do you use? Any post prosessing tips?

Does anyone have samples of their self produced song with cowbell? (/w tips of the production ofc)

IMO, you definitely want to close-mic it and have it sit around 5 dB higher than any instrument in the mix.

So seriously. Does that thing always come out fucking loud, so anyone doesn't mic it? I just thought about big badass rock drums with cowbell banging all over the place.

An honest opinion would be to test miking techniques when you're getting the drums set up. Try close-miking/just using the OHs a couple of takes and go with what you think sounds best.

I've never recorded drums but it would make more sense to me to close-mic everything you can just so you have more control over the drums.

I'd think it would come over the OHs / room mics loud enough.. If not snappy enough, then put a 57 or something on it for support.

Yeah a sm57 would probably do it, just to add some body and volume if needed in the mix.

If you have your OHs and room mics set up properly, I can't imagine you'd need a close mic on it unless you're anal about stereo imaging. The cowbell will bleed into every open mic. Alot.

Throw a 57 on it to be safe, then come mix time you can audition it. I'm will to bet there's a 99% chance it's gonna come in loud enough through the overheads that you'll delete the track.
