mono compatability

That's why when you mix and check in mono you want to make the guitars different from each other so they'll stand out. Different EQ, different tone, etc. If you can hear both guitars in mono, then when in stereo they'll both stand on their own and probably sound great.
is this the way most people handle it? My guitars go to absolute shit in mono and I've been trying to come up with something to do about it

My rhythm guitars become much more turd-like in mono as well. I've contemplated the whole "Different EQ, different tone, etc." thing, but especially when the rhythm guitars are supposed to be representing only one guitar player, I still prefer the feeling of them being the same tone. I really should experiment with it though before I shut the door on it, because I just may come up with some beastly mono-compatible guitars that still have a good vibe together in stereo...

I think it's very easy to not realise how often stuff gets heard in mono. TVs, crappy portable players, listening from far away, some club systems, mobile phone speakers etc. Unfortunately these days it's not really the norm for people to be listening to music sitting in front of a pair of nice stereo speakers, it's often just background.

regardless of all the geeky shit (phase coherancy), I use the mono button to see what happens to my mixes when someone listening to them fucks the listening environment up. Some people do stack speakers on top of eachother or have them 15ft apart. But with everybody listening through an ipod pair of headphones I think it doesn't matter anywhere near as much as it used too. imo

Mono can also help you see where instruments are interacting in the spectrum. We notice this interaction in the higher frequencies more because their cycles are quicker than down low. As there is a lot of information up there you could cut an octave on one guitar by 3db or so and then do an octave up or below on the other guitar and have a better fitting jigsaw. Mono helps me see where the conflicts are, giving my mixes more space. Any reverb too needs its own hole, which is something that is all too often forgotten. Its hard though, I am still chasing mastery on this one.

I set up all my drums in mono to check for phase cancellation.

I get my general levels in mono too.

I switch it in and out during mix to make sure my guitars don't disappear (much)

100<75<>75>100 panning helps with that

I learned that the hard way when we had a Storyteller video out that could be seen on swedish television regularly... I was literally in shock when I saw (heard) it on TV the first time, and it was in mono. Those wide and fat Fredman guitars were forced into the center, and it really sounded bad. The percieved level of the rhythm guitars dropped with at least 2-3dB, probably more.

I don't know which song you have in mind, but your last album was really wide. It sounds great in stereo, but in mono you hear more bass than guitars.

I'm referring to the song "Seed of Lies" from the album Tales of a Holy Quest, released in 2003. Recorded and mixed by Fredrik Nordström @ Studio Fredman, so I guess I can blame it on him. ;) As far as I can remember, he never check his mixes in mono.

I didn't remember starting this thread...I guess that's b/c I did it 3 years ago.:p
I originally asked it b/c of the rhythm guitar thing.
However, It seems like every TV broadcast except really old reruns are in stereo (or surround) now.
The mono check is useful for a lot of stuff but I think in terms of "translation to consumers" that an ipod/earbud check is more important than mono compatibility at this point.

Truth, every album I have of his from Whoracle to Blackwater Park sounds like my ass in mono
