Montreal Shooting!

Welcome To Kanata Eh!
Gunman's blog paints dark portrait

CP) - In an online blog, Kimveer Gill includes a photo of a tombstone with his name printed on it - below it the phrase: "Lived fast died young. Left a mangled corpse."

The blog, posted on an online hub of goth culture, paints a dark portrait of the 25-year-old man published reports have identified as the trenchcoat-wearing gunman who opened fire on students at Montreal's Dawson College Wednesday, killing one and injuring 19 others.

Gill's image gallery, which contains more than 50 photos, depicts the young man in various poses holding a Baretta CX4 Storm semi-automatic rifle and donning a long black trenchcoat and combat boots.

"His name is Trench. you will come to know him as the Angel of Death," he wrote on his vampirefreaks.com profile.

"He is not a people person. He has met a handfull (sic) of people in his life who are decent." But he writes that he finds the vast majority to be "worthless, no good, kniving, betraying lieing (sic), deceptive."

The last of Gill's six journal entries Wednesday was posted at 10:41 a.m, about two hours before the gunmen was shot dead after the college shooting.

In the latest one, Gill extols the virtues of a morning quaff of whisky. Other posts Wednesday deal with topics as mundane as dry contact lenses, purple freezies, and eating eggs and toast for breakfast.

It is not clear when the photographs were posted.

The blog's prominent photo shows a close up of Gill curled into the fetal position, his intense brown eyes peering into the camera from between his bent knees.

"Rock and Roll baby!" reads the caption below another photo, tongue outstretched, holding up a black semi-automatic weapon with one hand and making the sign of the devil with another.

"I think I have an obbsetion (sic) with guns . . . muahahaha," is the inscription below another picture of Gill aiming the barrel of the gun at the camera.

"Anger and hatred simmers within me," said another caption below a head shot of Gill grimacing.

The site also has lengthly lists of likes and dislikes. On the "likes" list are: first-person-shooter video games, "Super Psycho Maniacs roaming the streets freely," massacres, trenchcoats, destruction and "crushing my enemies skulls."

He also shows a penchant for semi-automatic handguns, combat shotguns, sawed-off shotguns, assault rifles and myriad other weapons.

He dislikes: "The world and everything in it."

"But to be more specific," he continues, he hates jocks, preps, country music, Hip Hop, "all those who oppose my rule."

Gill seems to harbour particular disdain for authority, including police, "all the government on Earth," "bible-thumping know-it-alls" and God.

Gills list of favourite music groups is a who's who of heavy metal: Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Iron Maiden, Danzig and Metallica, but only the "old stuff."

His favourite movies list includes mostly gory horror films. He enjoys violent video games including the controversial "Postal," a first-person shooter game, in which the protagonist goes on a killing spree while completing everyday errands.

A questionnaire on the blog reveals both banal and disturbing insights into Gill's life.

He likes drinking, owns 300 CDs, prefers Burger King over MacDonalds and says "heavy metal rules."

He writes that he is 6-foot-1, was born in Montreal and is of Indian heritage. His weakness is laziness and he fears nothing. A goal he'd like to achieve by the end of the year is to stay alive.

However, responding to the question, "How do you want to die?" Gill replied "like Romeo and Juliet - or in a hail of gunfire."

----

For those of you uncertain of what they're talking about, this 25 year old pulled up to dawson college in his black sunbird, went to his trunk and removed a few weapons. He than began to barge his was into the school he opened fire in the cafe, injuring 20 students...one girl of 17 years old Anastasia Lasouza died becausw he shot her in the throat. two others are in EXTREME CRITICAL condition because of a shot to the head. and more than a dozen others injured and scarred for life. 400 students from this campus called the police the 2nd the gunner began to fire, ironicly there wherer 2 police officers in the building for a drug search, who even followed the guy! within 3 minutes the building was surrounded by swat, the police took fire on the gun man, he dropped his semi-automatic and dropped to the ground gasping for air.. the police officers handcuffed him and dragged him outside barely holding onto his life. Afterwords the school was evacuated...

This is one big of a story right now, especially since I know alot of people who go to this school. everyone in the cafe dropped to the ground like right away, people scattered in the hallways trying to find a good hiding spot or leave the building.

Plz feel free to coment on this, and send your condolences to the friends and family of the injured, and dead.

the only thing I feel like speaking about at this time is the fact he liked heavy metal....someone is going to say how it promits evil behaviour in people i just know it...

I kept hearing about that on the radio today at work, sad stuff :( Although I kind of assumed he liked punk music as opposed to metal since he has a bigass mohawk.. I guess Tipper Gore's gonna have fun with this one.

Sounds like one sick egotistical puppy. He said he feared nothing, when really it seems like he feared being caught out as the sham he was, while listing/doing the so called pop culture of those "disaffected" with the world.

My condolences to those effected, it's sad that the girl Anastasia had her life cut so short for no real reason.

This is pretty much a Canadian Columbine. When somebody's Blog profile says that they like "first-person-shooter video games, "Super Psycho Maniacs roaming the streets freely," massacres, trenchcoats, destruction and "crushing my enemies skulls."", THAT is when you call in several psychologists, a shit load of medication, and just somebody for him to talk to if only for a minute.

I think I know exactly what he might have been thinking while he was dying, gasping for air, when the police cuffed him and dragged him away. It was probably something along the lines of either "What the fuck did I just do?" or "This is why I hate the world." I'm guessing the second one, since from what it says, it seemed like there was no saving this kid.

i hate how they make a point to mention about the heavy metal music.. if a kid did this who listened to pop music, it would never be mentioned.. but yeah, the kid obviously had serious psychological probs that someone (his parents, friends, teachers etc) should have seen the warning signs to long before it happened.. but then, there's no point thinking about the 'should have' of the situation.. only what can we do if we ever come across a kid who is thinking this way in the future? try and get them some help before these things happen again.

Kimveer Gill, 25, opened fire at a Montreal college on Wednesday, killing a young girl and leaving 19 wounded before police shot him in the arm. He then turned a gun on himself, an initial autopsy has confirmed.

The slain girl has been identified as 18-year-old Anastasia DeSousa, of Montreal. Her friend, James Santos, knelt by her side as Gill looked on.

"I basically stayed with her, trying to keep her awake. She was breathing, but she was not doing great," Santos told CTV News.

In a cruel twist, Santos said that Gill then turned a gun on him and ordered him to leave DeSousa behind. He then grabbed Santos.

"He told me, 'Today I'm going to die today,'" recalled Santos. "And I said, 'You don't have to, you don't have to die, you can make this easy on you and let everyone go.' ... He said, 'Well, I'm going to die.'"

Doctors are treating several victims at Montreal General Hospital, including two that are "extremely critical in the intensive care unit," according to trauma director Tarek Razek.

Two other patients are in critical condition, and one of the four is in a deep coma. But Razek said their status could change at any moment.

"It's on an hour by hour basis," he told a press conference. "We've already gone past a dozen hours, which is a good sign."

Another four victims are out of intensive care but remain in hospital.

Gill, of Laval, had a Mohawk haircut and wore head-to-toe black clothing when he stormed into the cafeteria of Dawson College, just before 1 p.m. ET Wednesday.

As horrific as the shooting was it could have easily been much worse. A police officer outside the college saw the gunman enter the building and police arrived at the scene three minutes after the man opened fire.

The 25-year-old gunman, who carried an automatic rifle and two other guns -- which were all legally registered firearms -- was shot dead as he tried to leave the school.

A blog maintained by Gill contains more than 50 photos depicting the young man in various poses holding a Baretta CX4 Storm semi-automatic rifle and wearing a long black trenchcoat and boots.

"His name is Trench. you will come to know him as the Angel of Death," he wrote on his profile on vampirefreaks.com, an online hub of goth culture.

The blog paints a dark portrait of the man.

"He is not a people person. He has met a handfull (sic) of people in his life who are decent." But he writes that he finds the vast majority to be "worthless, no good, kniving, betraying lieing (sic), deceptive."

The last of Gill's six journal entries Wednesday was posted at 10:41 a.m, just two hours before the gunman was shot dead after the college shooting.

Police had earlier believed there were as many as four gunmen.

'He shot right at us'

Panicked students described a scene of chaos and violence, as people fled or hid from the shooter.

"He shot right at us. And when he shot at us we jumped and ran the other way," said student Ali Hussein. He added that one bullet struck a wall close to where he was standing.

Another student told Montreal radio station 940 News she was on the phone at the college's front entrance when she heard five gunshots and a window breaking. She walked into the hallway and was inches from the gunman.

"All of a sudden I turned around and saw a man dressed in black with a huge assault rifle," she said. "People didn't know what was going on ... they thought it was a joke."

A number of officers surrounded the school with guns drawn, while others helped to evacuate students from inside the English-language CEGEP school which has about 10,000 students.

Police responded within three minutes

Police Chief Yvan Delorme told The Canadian Press the attacker sprayed gunfire at random targets. He said provincial police had been called in to investigate, which is standard in a killing involving the local force.

Delorme said police were able to respond quickly because two officers were already at the college on a drug-related matter when they heard gunshots and took action right away.

Delorme said the lessons learned from the 1989 Montreal Massacre when Marc Lepine murdered 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique, helped save lives. Emergency service workers now understand the need to coordinate and act quickly, and police have been trained to move in and deal with a suspected shooter right away, he said.

"Before our technique was to establish a perimeter around the place and wait for the SWAT team. Now the first police officers go right inside. The way they acted saved lives (today)."

Witnesses said Gill started shooting outside the college, then -- without saying a word-- he entered the second-floor cafeteria and opened fire. At times he hid behind vending machines before emerging to take aim -- at one point at a teenager who tried to photograph him with his cell phone.

Police dismissed suggestions that terrorism played a role, and Delorme said the gunman opened fire haphazardly at no target in particular until he saw the police and specifically took aim at them.

Police took cover behind a wall as they traded fire with the gunman, student Andrea Barone, who was in the cafeteria, told The Associated Press. He said the officers proceeded cautiously because many students were trapped around the shooter, who yelled "Get back! Get back!" every time an officer tried to move closer.

Eventually, Barone said, the gunman went down in a hail of gunfire. An initial autopsy shows that police shot Gill in the arm, and he then shot himself in the head.

Dawson College is located at the corner of Atwater and Sherbrooke in the heart of downtown Montreal.

Most of the students, who are between the ages of 16 and 18, fled to the nearby Concordia University campus where a student union barbecue was taking place. They were provided with clean clothes, beverages and even counselling.

Those services should have been provided by the Dawson College administration, said Dawson student council president Melanie Hotchkiss in a news conference Thursday with members of the Concordia Student Union.

She praised the CSU for its help but had tough criticism for her own school.

"This help was essential, and the DSU alongside the CSU were able, through solidarity, to fulfill students' needs that should have been dealt with through the Dawson administration," Hotchkiss said.

She pointed to the need for better communication and cooperation in future.

Harper says current laws don't work

Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke only briefly to the media Thursday afternoon, saying it was not appropriate to comment without knowing all of the facts.

"We can obviously just observe that laws we have didn't prevent this tragedy, which is why our government in the future, because of this incident and many others, are looking to make our laws more effective," he said.

Harper said debates are sure to unfold about the government's role of censorship in video games and the monitoring of the Internet.

"We as a society have trouble squaring our outrage at some of the images that we see, some of the images that are communicated to people, young people in particular. We have trouble squaring that in our belief of freedom and our desire to avoid censorship," he said.

"However terrible images or messages that are sent to people or people may see ... they do not absolve any of us from our moral responsibilities as individuals to act in ways that treat our fellow human beings with decency."

Harper offered condolences to the family of the young woman killed in the rampage and said his thoughts are with the victims still in hospital and the people horrified by the ordeal.

He said he spoke to Quebec Premier Jean Charest and Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay Wednesday night and offered any help they might need from the federal government.

----

In a recent report they cleared the idea that VIDEO GAMES did this to him...which is good as well since music and video games did not cause this, but some people are massively gay so yeah.

Ugh, now they're blaming this on video games and the Internet.

I bet Harper never thought for a second that maybe he liked FPS games because he liked guns, not the other way around. I'm a huge fan of CS and GTA and I know many other people who are too, but that doesn't influence us to shoot people. Gamers don't shoot people, violent people do. Obviously, this person was not only violent, he had serious mental health issues to boot.

:erk:

I realize it's entertainment, but why does the world need video games involving mindless shooting sprees tied to real-world scenarios? I'm in no way blaming vids for this shooting, but I see some of these games on TV and think, what sick-o would put out a game like that?

But, having gone through psychiatric episodes with family members, I feel for what may have been going through his head. It is a shame he was unable to get help from those who knew him. Psychiatric health is almost a taboo in this world, and that is the ultimate shame for the world. What happens in the mind is no different than what happens to the physical body, in terms of care. Hormones and chemicals are powerful agents, and when they are out of balance in a person they need to receive treatment. Why the taboo?

My deep condolences for all innocent persons involved in the happenings. I am saddened.

and trenchcoats and combat boots.

Let's all stereotype genres of music, hairstyles and articles of clothing despite their obvious utility advantages. Honestly, I'm not surpised that this incident occurred. And what that says to me is that this world has sunk to a level of desensitization that should never be reached. The guy was clearly messed up, but it had nothing to do with what he wore or listened to. It's sad and I'm sure it'll be on the news all week (because humanity has some kind of morbid fascination with tragedy) but the kinds of connections the media are drawing are absolutely pathetic in my opinion.

Videogames as evil sources of brainwashing inspiring school shootings? For every 1 assassin there's untold millions who find satisfaction and possibly an outlet for their aggression through this medium. Who knows if they would be prompted to commit violence otherwise if not able to let it out through a virtual world? As for the internet, it's 99% porn. I have no interest in porn, but I will say that I love the internet for its independence from government, corporation, or worldview. It's the true freedom of speech and press that you just don't get in print. Goodluck regulating that.

I have long hair. My favorite colors are red and black. Red because it is the color of all passions. I listen to death metal. I also listen to Björk. I like videogames with guns like Unreal Tournament. I also like cheesy RPGs. Should I now be discriminated against because of some people's sweeping generalizations? It's just like with politics: "America- we are not all jerks" - "Metal fans - we are not all psychopaths".

/end rant.

Actually I lied. I have one more thing to say:

I am offended by the inclusion of this "information" as implied relavence to the story. It's like saying "The shooter wore red underwear." As if this has any bearing at all on his motivations, the resultant tragedy, or the investigation into the case. It implies a connection that does not exist, and as I stated above, I find this connection both erroneous and offensive. If people can get pissed about others treading on their religion, then I voice my complaint with the Associated Press for implying that rugged boots or heavy metal have any significance whatsoever in this story. If they can admit that not all Muslims are terrorists, then they can acknowledge that rock music has nothing to do with deranged assassins.

I hate when things like this tarnish the entire metal community. Unfortunately, as long as there are highly violent individuals who make a big deal out of their being metal fans--just as there are highly violent individual who make a big deal out of being rap/hip-hop fans, the genre WILL continue to have a bad reputation. I hate to say it, but when there is a highly publicized stereotype of this nature, then you will be under a microscope and you will have to live to a higher standard to avoid being lumped into the same category. :(

The other sad thing is that this proves that if a person wants to get hold of guns and weapons to do whatever illegal things they want to do with them, it doesn't matter what laws people try to pass. The creeps will get the weapons. It's a terrible shame that in this case people died. :(

@ Kenneth - everything you said up there is gold

things like movies and videogames cannot possibly cause such things, because if they did then EVERYONE would be out doing the same thing (no, only the black-wearing, metal-listening types apparently)

Indeed. If things like videogames and tv shows always influence people to that extreme of a level, then I'd be running around my school with a Claymour, trying to cast Magic Spells, believing that people in real life actually had turn-based fights.

prehaps the most deranged/sickeing thing about this tale is his blog on vampirefreaks.com

all though what he did cannot be excused, it pisses me off that people portray his character as sinister before he even took out his gun. "BLack trench coat, black boots, mohawk, metal lover=killer" is there rationalization...all I know is this cannot be good for metal in the media, it will do more damage than good..but still nothing of grandeur. i'll keep you guys posted on the victims status
