I keep most of my random files on a set of externals, and I run all my proggies/games off of WDC raptor, and my OS has its own dedicated Raptor.
Externals are fine for shit like mp3s, AVI's, and what not. Just don't try to run your OS off of one... unless you're like me and you have a installation of Ubuntu on an external so you can hook it up to any computer you want and have freedom, albeit slow freedom.

I always try to backup important files onto DVD-Rs. I just did that recently for most of my pictures I've taken here over the last year. Not because I'm worried about having some sudden harddrive failure like Doomy, but because I constantly bash this laptop against doorjambs in this tiny fucking country. Quite frankly I'm amazed this thing still works with all the crap I've put it through. I think the case is made of adamantium.

What exactly do you guys have on your HD that causes your entire life to crumble when it crashes? The only thing I can think of is sentimental pics. Is it business related or something?

I have everything from family photos to the only existing copy of early rehearsal recordings or logo sketches and shit like that, and of course bank stuff and old school stuff etc etc. Photos and old band stuff that'd be an arse to lose, and re-ripping my music would probably take a while but that's no biggie. In general I try to have everything in several places just in case

Mine was all label stuff. Everything I have ever done for Ass Magnet since day 1 was lost. The sad thing is I always meant to back everything up, I just never did. Serves me right for being so damn lazy, I suppose.

been meaning to buy an external HD for years. Should probably do it. Though I have no real "valuable", I would be sort of annoyed to lose some of my olde vacation pics and yeah, re-ripping music, I don't know if I'd have the patience to do it at all (well most of it is on my mp3-player anyway).

Other than that, mp3s and pornography can always be found again later.
