so i decided against going to see opeth on saturday and instead i went to go see life of agony at jarrod's in attleboro, ma.
it should be known that i was a nervous wreck. i had just gotten my car back from the shop and the new part they had put on in the front was working fine but seemed to be making some noise a bit. also i was so scared about getting hit that i felt all paranoid and was driving very tensely.
i got to the show and parked in a sweet spot in front of the club. it took forever to get in because the design of jarrod's is very shitty. it is a very literal underground club and it has a small door above ground to go in and the line was moving TOO slow.
i finally got in and was wandering around for awhile because there were three opening acts that weren't exactly my cup of tea but they got the crowd going. one even started a "U-S-A!" chant.
finally LOA hit the stage and i got up front. after the intro ended and they launched into "River Runs Red" the whole crowd started moving and shoving around. not too violently i will add. i got pushed a bit over to the side and was able to find a decent spot there for the rest of the night that was free from the mosh pit that had started but unfortunately was right in front of the PA!
the singer was obviously not feeling sober as he was changing the rhythm of the words left and right and his singing was way out of sync with the fans singing the song properly. this was disconcerting as the first two songs were two of my favorites and i was bummed that he messed them up. the band rocked though! great fucking sound. eventually the singer revealed that it was the last night of the tour, he was drunk, and that if jarrods were to go up in flames we would all be fucked because it was a shitty club. he went on many rants about how shitty the promoter was.
in fact he must be a sentimental drunk because there would be gaps between songs while he went on rants about how much he loves his band and the fans for sticking with them and making this tour so special. in his own weird way he made me feel very comfortable at the show and happy. and his singing definitely got better as the show went on. by the third song he was back in sync with the band and the rest of the show was very very good.
also funny was when the crowd shouted "yankees suck" and the singer made sure to tell them that he didn't care because sports are stupid and that he didn't need to follow a team to feel manly.
also of interest was when they had problems with the monitor feeding back and they decided to just go on with the show without monitors. i thought that was way cool of them.
also the show was wonderfully not too violent but just in case i made friends with some of the "tougher" looking guys around me so that there would be no trouble. in fact one guy was even polite enough to warn me he was going to crowd surf ahead of time and i was able to prepare as to not get hit in the head.
by the end of the show i was way sweaty, my neck hurt from headbanging, and my right ear was completely muffled from the speaker. but i felt good and when i got back to my car to find no damage had been done i felt very relieved and it seemed like all the stress i was feeling earlier had gone away. i got in my car and drove home and it felt so good to be driving my baby again that i felt wonderful and in one of the better moods i had been in lately.
big ups to LOA for making my night. seriously
