The thing is, all cables suffer some degree of signal loss. Some less, some more. Why would you want to use cables with obvious loss (C in Greg's samples)?
It's not even the question wether they sound better or worse.. or different. The fact is, there is audible signal loss. Period.
You mention "coloured" cables - errm, what? The A and B cable in Gregs test aren't coloring the sound, they're just more accurately transferring it. That's why some people (most people?) preferred them.. and that's what a studio should offer, imho. If you lose the definiton and high-end of a played guitar because of the cable, you can't just dial in the treble poti on your amp because there is information missing and simply boosting the high-end won't make up for it.
And yes of course it doesn't matter as much as the player.. or the amp. But we all search for the perfect sound / chain, and $100-a-piece cables won't bring us there alone - but good converters, preamps, interfaces, microphones, rooms, instruments are a factor just like the cables. Perhaps they're the last 2% missing for a great sound? And maybe not, but it's still a difference and we all know that tiny differences tend to add up in a mix.
