Next time around I might go for 421s on all the toms. There are 4 in the studio, so it should cover most kits, and they always seem to pre-eq them in a pleasant way. Especially if they are larger toms.
Coolest part about the MD421 IMO, aside from sounding fucking awesome, is that the transients are generally really well defined compared to other microphones. Every track I edit that was done with an MD421 is a piece of cake - most others see me editing toms based off transients in the overhead/adjacent tom tracks.
