need recommendations on Goth music

Diary of Dreams, Deine Lakaien, Helium Vola, Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Sisters of Mercy (technically not gothic, but they're generally grouped in anyways), Bella Morte, London After Midnight, Fields of the Nephilheim, Seraphim Shock, the Cruxshadows. ie. Look for death rock, darkwave, and "medieval." As for metal that someone who enjoys gothic music would like, try My Dying Bride, Summoning, Agalloch, Eternal Tears of Sorrow or Agathodaimon.

...I second London After Midnight, one of my favourite bands.

If you're more into gothic/vampyric metal check out Theatres des Vampires. Their earlier stuff like "The Vampire Chronicles" or "Bloody Lunatic Asylum."

My Dying Bride is not gothic for crying out loud

Dark wave is a big concept, it's derived from the old new wave and under dark wave there's still gothic rock, coldwave, electrowave,...

so if you like dark electronic music, try: Psyche and Depeche Mode

for more gothic rock: Bauhaus, The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy and The Mission

Which is why I said metal for someone who likes gothic music.

didn't read it properly, my bad

Dark Wave, Lycia are a good bet but that is a genre I never got into because Electonica meets Gothic Pop is a bit weak for me.

Still, some recommendations I can definetely give, The Cure, Katatonia (their newer work is more mainstream) and The Dresden Dolls should all fall well and truely under the umbrella of gothic music and given this is the Non-Metal forum should meet that criteria as well.

My favourite band, Type O Negative are tackily goth and quite camp at times when it comes to playing on Gothic Stereotypes. While not all of their material will appeal to people that are not into metal or atleast hardcore, October Rust is a gothic pop/rock masterpiece and a lot of Life is Killing me should appeal to people with that taste in music.

I listen to gothic metal but not as its necessarily known to the genre "gothic metal" ...and no offense to these bands, but can someone please explain to me how bands like Satyrian, Tristiania and your average symphonic pop-metal bands with female singers are gothic metal? I just don't understand it

well there's a lot of discussion to which band belongs to which genre and personally I too think it is not right to categorize bands but it does help when ppl need recommendations

Yes, I completely agree with you there but I just don't see how there's anything "gothic" musically about those bands. I don't know, save some lyrical content, but really to me it sounds more like symphonic pop-metal as I mentioned before.

If you don't mind the fact that their japanese I'd reccomend Malice Mizer. Heres a sample below.

Moi Dix Mois is heavier if the classical influence doesn't really do it for you. For Darkwave check Schwarz Stein out(still Japanese despite german name).

well the symphonical is often linked to the gothic mood and so is the female high voice

Maybe you haven't heard old Tristania? There is nothing pop-metal about them. Nothing that would lump them in with bands that I would put in that pop-metal category like Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation etc. And I find it hard to say how they are gothic when everything about them is gothic - the atmosphere, the keyboards, the violins, the vocals, the lyrical and musical themes (ie Poe), the appearance (though obviously that counts for little). Certainly more so than bands like the Cure, who are basically a gloomy pop band who wear makeup.
