Just curious as to your thoughts on a subject that has came up with me. One of the bands that I want for next year may catch a very good tour across North American tour in the early spring as the main opening act. Not only would this be their first time in the States, but it will be an extensive tour.

So, knowing that, would you still want them to play the festival? Or should I turn my attention towards someone that has not performed in the States yet or only been here once/twice in several years?

Glenn H.

Hi Glenn,

If the band is good enough that you want them to play at PP6, then I definitely would like the opportunity to see them at PP6 as well as other places in the states - especially if this is their first time in the states. There is no guarantee that they may ever make it back, so I'd like to have every chance to see them while I can.

Furthermore, those folks who attend PP6 may not be able to make it to a local show near their hometown due to scheduling or budget reasons. If the fan is certain to attend PP6, then they are certain to witness a date on this "mystery tour".

If the band is doing an extensive Tour on both coasts, Id say Id prefer you not to have them.

Part of the attraction for me of PP6 is getting bands that I cant see anywhere else.

Of course I know that theres 9 other bands but thats just my opinion.

Honestly I will go regardless (as long as we can come and go with the GB's from the venue). :D

Touring both coasts doesn't count as extensive unless you happen to live in NY/LA.

If they're going to be hitting pretty much every state and it's a sure thing, you might want to keep them on your list for consideration but explore other possibilities. But we all know how unpredictable this stuff can be so it's hard to say. Maybe if you tell me who the band it would help. :D

I guess I'd say if it comes down to booking this mystery band or somebody who's been at one or more previous prog powers, go ahead and book the mystery band. On the other hand if it means keeping somebody off the list who's never had a chance to play here, save the mystery band for another year.

You've always brought great bands to progpower. If you think they should be here and you want them here for next year, then by all means bring em on!

I live in atlanta and am lazy, so my vote is to include them as long as the tour doesn't include atlanta (which, even if considered "extensive", it likely may not). Robin shares this opinion.

Though I'll really be fine either way, i'm sure...

Ryan (oh, and if it's Angel Dust, bring them no matter what)

I would go see a good band as many chances as I could. Esp. as the type of bands that play PP don't get over here that often. If it is a band I like, I would go see them on their tour, even if it hit near my hometown a couple of weeks before PP...and it wouldn't bother me a bit to see them twice in the span of a couple of weeks time.

In other words, bring'em on!

Heres my thoughts: If this is a high profile band that alot of people that would attend Prog Power would know for quite some time maybe you can work out a special performance at PP. Say, fans choose the setlist, or maybe some kind of clause in the contract where the setlist would have to vary at least by 60- 75% than the ones played on their tour.

I am guessing if they are doing a headlining tour that means they probably will be a headliner at your show if they are that big. Take Evergrey for example they did a tour where they played 45 minutes I know at PP ican get a full set, therefore I would love to see them. A few bands that this might be are popping in my head and it really depends on the band. Considering alot of bands that tour the states don't even come to Houston.

If the band is opening up on an "extensive US tour", and would be opening up at Progpower...there is no need to have them...they would probably be playing the same setlist anyway..

If they're opening up on the US Tour and are of HEADLINER status at Progpower, by all means bring them on over. (Especially if it is Sonata Artica or Rhapsody)

I see a common them here Glenn.... We Trust You to make the best decisions here concerning next years show. If the act is of substantial value and a main eventer then I say go with it. As another person put it earlier, maybe you can put a clause in there that makes the performance different then the tour so fans can see both shows and have 2 different shows to see. Everbody wins then.....

Are the other shows in clubs, theatres, or something larger? If it's just clubs definitely bring them to the bigger stage set that you can offer at Earthlink. Also note I saw Blind Guardian at ProgPower yet knowing I would see them there I still bought tickets to see them again in Dallas which is 500 miles away from me.

Book them!

If it's a good band, I will see them at Prog Power and again in my area, if they play here...

It has happened before, actually... I saw Blind Guardian @ Prog Power and then in Ft. Lauderdale...

Same thing over here... I saw both Blind Guardian and Angra in Progpower and in New York. Same thing with Edguy, I missed the Pre Party to see them in NYC, with Tad Morose, and saw them in Atlanta as well...

Book them... But... does anyone have any idea about who that could be? lol

Definitely book them. Even the bands that do extensive tours still don't really hit enough areas for a majority of metal fans to go see them. I'll come up to Atlanta for Progpower, but I'm not going to say, Orlando, about 200 miles from where i live, to see one band. Besides, the Progpower show is usually special, not just their standard set list. The venue is also usually inferior on their tours. Earthlink is a better venue.

Couldn't have said it better myself. If they'd be playing a 30-minute or 45-minute set opening for someone else, but would be getting 90 minutes as a true headliner at ProgPower, bring 'em on!

The tour might, in fact, whet people's appetites for them at ProgPower, and depending on the timing, the band could even pre-announce their loong set at ProgPower DURING their tour.

Idiocy!!! Didn't read Glenn's post carefully enough...

...and in light of not having read it carefully enough, i totally agree with the sentiment of having them at ProgPower if they would be playing a longer set there than on the tour.

I think if the band's good enough, *especially* headline-caliber, bring 'em anyway. There'll be some people who bitch regardless of the outcome, but I think most of us trust your judgement, Glenn.

I do like your idea, Ben, of having a different setlist, and if the case is such that their role is different on the tour than at PP, then that will probably happen, but as I'm not a touring musician, I don't know how feasible that is. I think it depends on the band. But, come on, like a show at ProgPower wouldn't be different anyway. :)
