New 5150, New Clips

5150s = the shiznit :rock:
i'm not even sure if i like the cobra better than my 5150, although it's apples and oranges really. i really liked the cobra at high volumes, but yesterday i fired up the 5150 again and boy, i was blown away....
thinking about selling the marshall jcm800, though, as it gets zero playtime as of right now. i can't play it at home (volume!), and with a 5150 and a cobra at my hands i doubt i'll ever bring it to gigs. and i don't need 3 amps....

btw, dss3, how did your like your recto? i guess it wasn't quite your cup of tea seeing that you're already back to 5150 land, but maybe you could point out the differences and similarities between the 5150 and the recto?

Actually, I've been listening to Daylight Dies for the past week straight, so I'll take that as a compliment! I love the tone on their new album, it makes me want to snag an XXX to layer with my 5150.

Fragle, I'd sell that JCM ASAP, and put it towards either another hi-gain amp to switch around between, or a nice axe!

I liked the Recto, but it definately wasn't doing it for my like the 5150 did/does. It was awesome for heavy, downtuned, agressive chug, but the lead tone was utter shit, and the mid voicing didn't suit my playing style as well as the 5150. The Recto was more refined, less raw and beastly, with a bit looser bottom end, way harsher top end, and felt like the low mids were pulled back. It was a bit more defined and articulate than the 5150, but I just couldn't get into the mid voicing and lack of lead tone.

Are they dissimilar enough for that? I was considering getting a combo of one and head of the other, but worried there would be too much common ground in the tones to warrant both purchases.

Well, they are pretty similar, but the XXX has more of Marshall flavor, and some similarities to Mesa, while still retaining the overall 5150 character. If you're pressed for cash, only one would work fine, but I'd love to pick up another XXX

I really liked the lead tone... especially the palm muting part around 50 seconds or so....

2 further questions: Green or Red channel? Hi or Normal gain inputs?

The intro of this reminds me of something... cannot quite put my finger on it. Grrr.

Sounds good, DSS. Did you wear the suit and tie when you did this? =)

So the guy who's receiving the head I think is very happy ..... :waah::(
I'm sorry!!!
Usually someone trust them because of higher rates and then they make this shitty things... bah I'm concerned about how my boogie from canada will get here... :zombie::zombie::zombie: I hope it won't be just dust eheheheh!

Not pressed for cash so much as space and time. If I bought both, one or the other would spend most of its days in a closet, especially if they have a lot of tonal overlap. I'd prefer a pair of amps with more distinct personalities, ones that compel me to keep them regularly circulating in and out of action.

The only amps I've tried lately that satisfied me were Peavey models all based on one another to some degree (Ultra, XXX, JSX, 51/65) and VHT (where cash does become an issue). I dig the sounds other people get out of Mesa, but lack the patience for tweaking them or the opportunity to run them at the volumes I suspect they require/deserve. With PeaVHT, I can pretty much stick all the knobs ('cept MV) at noon and go whenever the situation doesn't call for more attention to detail than that. :) Unfortunately, none of the Peav's have really jumped out at me as the one, head and shoulders above the rest. C'est la gear...

as for the jcm800, the reason why i still have it is that it NAILS the savatage "edge of thorns" tone down to a T. it's an incredible amp for lead playing...the lush reverb, the harmonic overtones, the interaction with your fingers, oh man don't get me started .... :D but as i said, it just doesn't get enough playtime, as my band is WAY heavier than savatage.

regarding your recto comments....well, isn't "harsher top end" and "more refined" a contradiction?
moreover, it's hard to believe that the recto is more articulate than the 5150. while my 5150 ain't no cobra in terms of note definition, it surely is one of the clearer amps i've owned, especially for thrash metal single note rhythm work. interesting, really....well, someday i'll own a recto, i KNOW it

All red channel, I find the green channel to have a certain fuzz to the top end I don't like as much. Hi gain input, OD808 infront of it.
really? now that just goes to show you how everybody's ears are different. i always thought the lead channel had more bite and "sizzle" than the crunch, which imho has stronger low mids and more bottom end (and therefore it's unusable without a boost to tighten it up, way too fizzy without one imo).

Hello

I like the feel but to me the Pedal is robbing the amp of its detail and causing that plastic sound in the midrange. Some people love that though so its just my take. Its, by no means, a bad sound though. .I think the voicing is good and its smooth too.
