I currently mix on a 7 year old Amd 64 x2 3ghz pc and I'm getting really tired of having to bounce stuff, unbounce to make revisions, then bounce again. I made a quote for a new custom pc.

Case: Coolermaster
CPU: Intel i7 2700k quad core 3.50GHz, 8MB Cache
Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS EXTREME INTEL Z68 ROG
Memory: 16gb Kingston hyper-x ddr3 1600mhz
Hard disk 1: 80gb Intel 320 series SD SATA 3gbs
Hard disk 2: 2TB WD Black SATA 6 Gb/s 64mb
Power Supply: 600w quiet 80plus quad rail
Cooling: Super quiet 22dba triple copper heatpipe

It comes to 1245 pounds. What do you think? I'm guessing this can be overclocked too?

Anyway I guess it would make a huge difference to my current setup lol

Get the Intel. If there's a decent savings on the processor stick with a 2600k. Video card?

Cheers! It comes with some onboard thing. I'm not bothered about games etc... Plus I have a spare card. The Bulldozer AMD processor seems to be a good deal cheaper but with 8 cores. But then each core isn't as fast as each intel core.

It's not really about the theoretical performance (GHz x cores), it's about real world performance. In the current processor landscape, Intel rules the roost for the top half of the market as far as real life performance goes

supposedly the new amd fx cpu's are a bust... The older phenom II x6 is faster in most applications and the intel core i5 is faster for the same price...

I do like AMD and rock a meager phenom quad core ( first gen.. the phenom ii x6 is better)

also that mobo you spec'd is a complete gamers/overclockers board...

if firewire is something your interested in Gigabyte sells a few models with a ti firewire chip....

I'm going to get a cheaper motherboard (ASUS® P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3: PCI-E 3.0 READY, SLI, CROSSFIREX) but order it overclocked to 5.0ghz. Added liquid cooling to the system as well just to make it cooler hehe And upgraded the SSD to 160.

All comes to 1267 pounds inc VAT and going to buy it on 12 months interest free finance :) Better pay it off otherwise it goes up to 2grand over 4 years lol

That SEEMS like a lot of money, unless I'm completely missing something.

I recently paid around £750 for

i7 2700k
p8z68 pro
corsair 16gb DDR3
corsair 120gb SSD
corsair ax850 PSU

I used the same case from my last build which was no more than £40, and I had a couple of 1TB 7200rpm sata 2 drives (is sata 3 necessary for anything but SSD?) and they were about £60 each last year. Then you just need your cooler, I can't see why it's coming to over £1200!

Just what it comes to on pcspecialist.co.uk

It's overclocked and comes with a 2tb sata 6/gbs hard drive. I've managed to reduce it to 1100.

Ah right it comes pre built? That'll be why then....no interest in having a go at piecing it together yourself? You could save a lot.

Haven't got the time really, and i like the fact that they test it etc... And get warranty. It's also nice that it just comes and i can turn it on and start installing software straight away hehe

Just as a matter of interest, I checked out the site you listed and put the same spec parts in (but not exactly the same parts because the choice is very limited) and it came to £1244, About £360 more than what I actually spent. I wasn't able to find the option for overclocking so I don't know how much that costs, but with this motherboard and CPU, it's so so simple to overclock up to the safe limit. I literally had to click one button in the BIOS and it did it for me.

Well that's fair enough if you don't mind paying extra, I'm not going to lie, I HATE putting these things together, and if I had the money to throw away I'd get someone else to do it, but it was just far too much money that I could've been spending on other things. Best of luck :)

Cheers! I will probably look and see what all the components are separately too.

If you're open to any advice, to me it looks like you've got the hard drives backwards. Your fast SSD really should be 6GB/s, and your large storage device doesn't need to be that fast (in my opinion). The speed of the actual drive won't exceed the limits of SATA II (3gb/s), but the speed of your SSD will. That would save you money on the 2tb drive, but cost you a bit more on the SSD.

If you want to check out the components separately at other shops, have a look at different brands offering the same spec, you might find some are cheaper than the particular ones used by that site.
