Report Details Murder of 'Dimebag' Darrell

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A new police report details a chaotic scene at last December's Damageplan concert, with the tour manager getting wounded as he tried to prevent a gunman from climbing on stage — he then was helped to the side where he watched former Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott get shot in the head three times.

At the heavy metal concert, 25-year-old Nathan Gale killed four people, including Abbott, before a Columbus policeman shot and killed Gale.

Nearly 300 witness interviews, released Thursday in a 627-page report, showed people were confused about the sequence of the shootings at the Alrosa Villa nightclub.

Witnesses said Gale sneaked into the concert before opening fire with his 9mm handgun.

Christopher Paluska, Damageplan's tour manager, said he was shot first — though it was previously believed Abbott was the initial victim.

Paluska was one of three people shot who survived. Another, stage technician John Brooks, wrestled with Gale who pinned him as a hostage as police moved toward the stage.

Officer James Niggemeyer then killed Gale with one shotgun blast while he was holding Brooks hostage. Brooks told investigators although he didn't hear Niggemeyer fire at Gale, he felt Gale's grip weaken and hurried off the stage.

A grand jury cleared Niggemeyer, 31, of any wrongdoing in May. Gale still had 35 bullets left when killed, investigators said.

During the melee, Damageplan drummer Vincent Abbott hid behind amplifiers and lead singer Patrick Lachman jumped and screamed into the microphone for someone to call the police.

Gale's mother has said her son was obsessed with Pantera — was nominated for Grammys for best metal performance in 1995 for "I'm Broken" and in 2001 for "Revolution Is My Name" — and believed the band had stolen song lyrics from him.

He previously told both his mother and a former employer that he was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic before he was discharged from the Marines in October 2003, two years into a four-year stint. Military records do not mention mental illness as the reason for the discharge.

even with slugs i don't generally think of shotguns as being terribly accurate. i'm not a big gun-o-phile though, so i could be completely wrong.

ah, yes ... Damageplan + concert = alcohol consumption

why do they keep digging this up over and over? the killer was shot and killed ... everything that happened was pretty cut and dry ... RIP Dimebag ... now lets catch some other sickos

I shot with a shotgun a while ago. It isn't the most accurate thing on earth, but if you take your time, even if you don't have any experience of shooting, you can hit your target from a good distance (15 meters is a good distance for a shotgun).

most handguns, even a police issue Glock .45 have neither immediate stopping power nor total lethality. Niggemeyer had the wherewithal to bring the shotgun in the club with him, despite having very limited knowledge of the situation. Niggemeyer rules.

I saw the VH-1 Behind the Music on Pantera last night. Say what you will about VH-1 but those 1 hour documentaries are great.

Anyway, they have actual footage of the shooting together with the cop storming the stage with the shotgun. Not only is the killer holding one of the roadies hostage, with a pistol to his head, but this cop shot him at point blank range and ONLY hit the killer

I also thought shotgun bullets dispersed to hit a wider target...go figure

Also, Phil Anselmo is made out to be a TOTAL CUNT on that Behind the Special. It was almost embarrassing, so much so that the show appears to be biased towards the Darrell family

I watched that Behind the Music awhile back and yeah, those are usually pretty good shows.

I think the story goes that Phil was on tons of pain killers for his back during those tapings, and while he can really be a douche sometimes, I still like the dude. I love his vocals more and more with each passing year, mufucker is awesome on the latest Down.

I got over my anger about Dimebag getting killed, but it still blows. I was pretty pissed for quite a spell after that, though this year didn't really think about it on the anniversary.

Oh yeah and lurch, your whole stance of "let him rest" toward, well, any death I've seen discussed around here has really had an effect on me. I really, really like that way of thinking, and agree.

Yeah that was some chilling footage of that night. And you're right, that cop stormed that stage and just walked up to that dude like a fucking badass and was like "nope, you're done." :notworthy

They make Phil out to be a "cunt" because it gives them their story, creates their controversy and gives them an angle. And being the outspoken dude that he is and often putting his foot in his mouth, he gives folks plenty of opportunity. But one listen to that new Down record and it is clear that he is in a different place from say.... that second Superjoint Ritual that was dripping with drugs, hate, contempt...

Love the lyrics to "Mourn"... where he is sitting in a Texas hotel room waiting for a call to come to the funeral....

...and he waited 5 days...and then when he finally called, they told him to go to hell. It was all very peculiar, almost as if Anselmo's falling out with the band had become the scapegoat or distraction to what was essentially a random senseless killing.

Yeah, that all comes from legend that the dude yelled "you broke up the band and ruined my life" when he started firing... that guy was just a nutjob who probably should not have been so freely wandering around...

But, Phil has one hell of a support behind him with this new Down... so much insight from that whole incident to Katrina and onward... these guys have seen a lot in NOLA in the last year or so... makes for great heartfelt music.

Musically, he and Rex are leaving Vinnie in the dust... that Hell Yeah shit is an abomination. :ill:

I almost went to that show. A dude I worked with was a huge Damageplan fan and the guy he was going with backed out last minute. He didn't want to go alone and was going to pay for me. I wasn't up for it so I passed. The next morning, on my way to work, my wife calls to tell me someone was shot. It's not a great area so I figured it was in the parking lot or something. I was totally floored when I heard it was inside the venue and that Dimebag was dead. Unreal.

to be accurate, 5 people were shot and dead in the end. :hypno:

True but, had Dimebag not been one of those people, it would have been just another random act of violence. Hearing that a few random people were killed by some douchebag in a club you go to is crazy, but not unheard of. A musician that is legendary in some people's eyes being gunned down while on stage, to my knowldge, had never happened prior and is something you'd never expect to hear...at least not at a metal show.

Wasn't Gale from some podunk town in Clark County? I can't remember. I want to say Mechanicsburg or something.
