New DISSECTION sample

Alright. Now I'm hearing it properly. I can definitely hear the in flames comparisons, but I can also hear that it's genuine Dissection melodies.

Things that could have been better: rawer production and grimmer vocals.

All in all, great sample. I'm betting it will be a lot better and heavier live. There have been reports that the whole album is this slow.

Thomas, singer of Thyrfing says that the song as a whole is much more impressive than the sample, but not SOTLB-class.

Honestly, they couldn't top the best album in the world...

Ok, just read something posted by a swedish guy (David "Blackmoon" Parland) who is known from a few bands.

Apparently everything except the drums was recorded by Jon himself in prison. That could explain the weak production and why it's kind of stiff and not so groovy.

My own guess is now that they haven't recorded the new album yet, this single is just a stopgap sampler. I'm also guessing that they will record the whole album when the tour is over.

I dont care for the sample much but I wont pass judgement on the new material till I hear more. The video pretty much sucked. 43 Seconds of random blurry video clips and no sound.

Well, seems like these 53 seconds has got heads-a-spinnin'. One thing seems clear, people like the intro more than the verse riff, heh. I call the first half 'Iron Maiden-ish', Erik calls it 'Subterranean In Flames', and a couple others call it 'Lord Weird Slough Feg'. Jackpot. :tickled:

Hey at least all this chat has got me listening to SotLB again now, so 'tis all good.

I wondered if you eventually picked up that monumental album, good for you. :Spin:

Like Tranquillian said, the melodies are clearly Dissection. I'm stoked.

Yes, but if you ever become full on obsessed with Dissection you'll really appreciate the Somberlain.

Storm of the Light's Bane > The Somberlain
the wail on Black Horizons >= Storm of the Light's Bane

Operation 'no doubt' is now in process.

That wail is Dan Swano right?

What unearthly scream is that in one of the songs on SotLB??? Is it "Unhallowed" where it sounds like a woman having her spine ripped out through her vunt?

Yep. For years I assumed Jon just grabbed his nuts and went for it until Erik told me the truth. :loco:

I think Unhallowed, but I always forget. It's a good one though.

I think it's funny some people dismiss Dissection as "just another Gothenburg" band, because unlike any other melodic based death metal, Dissection scares the bejesus out of me.

EDIT: Spine exiting via vunt scream: Where Dead Angel's Lie. DUH.

Now that I've heard it on proper equipment it strikes me how bad the production is and how stilty it is. What's up with that stuttering rhythm and the simplest bassplaying ever?

I can't believe they will release this as a single.

That scream comes from "It", Tony Sarkka (Abruptum).

Okay after two listens it's stuck in my head, on the third I'm thinking YESSS!!!

:zombie:

I feel like dancing disco-style when I listen to this song. The lead sounds like something taken from a Sega Master System action game from the 80s. This is what Bee Gees would do if they turned metal. I'm saying this mainly because of the horrid bass/drum rhythm.

I realized the scream is in "Where Dead Angels Lie". But anyway, I had no idea what you were talking about with "It" so I went to librariusmetallicus to look up Abruptum:

A duo consisting of the infamous midget It, who left the black metal scene in 1996, and Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson (who used the pseudonym "Evil" when recording with the band). But the things that where recorded is not music in the way most people conceive it, it's more a form of hellish ambience with some occational drumming and buzzing guitars. The vocals consists of It's (quite literally) tortured shrieks and grunts, he was renowned/infamous (your choice) for his sessions of self-torture during the recordings.
Perhaps some of the most disturbing stuff that has been put onto a compact disc.

Haha, I didn't know any of that. Never heard any Abruptum... so Dissection sampled a previous scream, or they actually used "It" for that recording session?

It was present during the recording along with Legion of Marduk, there's a note about it somewhere in the booklet.

I'm not really sure what to make of the sample though, it's pretty pointless trying to judge "The Return" with this little snippet but I wasn't that impressed at all so far :|
