New Hammers of Misfortune song on Myspace!

Fuck, the more I go through fields the more I REALLY don't like Patrick's vocals. HoM NEEDS Scalzi.

The album has this odd phish vibe to it, likely due to the fact that Patrick sounds like a mix between Trey Anastasio and Bob Weir to me, and that there are some really "jammy" riffs going on in this.

Fields is the better of the two. Agriculture, Fields, Too Soon remind me of the Hammers of old. Where as Rats Assembly, Motorcade, and Train are all ruined by Patrick's abecedarianly delivered vocals that tediously trounce any hope of splendor. The new broad has grown on me, though she's a far cry from Jamie. While actively listening I can hear many touches of early HoM. There is hope in the future if they get rid of this punk rock cackler.

Naa...he works on Fields. Fields may end up rivaling The August Engine in time tbh. It's that good. My only minor complaint is that Chewy's drumming could be more ....explorative? He needs to be more inventgive and fill more space imo.

Man... I can't stand either of these records. They just... suck.

Well, I should be fair, it's not all suck. There is Almost, The Gulls, Train, and Too Soon. Those 4 tracks are pretty decent... Not great, but decent.

But then there's shit like Butchertown, which goes on about 8 minutes more than it should have. Easily the worst HoM track. And then there's the fields trilogy. It starts off just fine, but after the build up it drops you at some monotonous and boring vocals and some just plain boring song writing, then just continues on this till I'm ready to fall asleep. The rest of the tracks I can give or take. Really not much of that Hammer's patented charm where you really can't tell where the music is going to go. That feeling of excitement on The August Engine where you would think "Jesus Christ, where the hell can this go? HOLY SHIT THEY WENT THERE?! THAT'S FUCKING AWESOME!". With this it feels like you can predict every riff as it comes, every solo and what it's going to do...

I had trouble even getting through the albums without turning them off.

In my opinion, both vocalist's need to be replaced, and Cobett needs to take a break for a few years and rework the song writing process for HoM, because if the future of HoM is this... *snooooooooore*

It was difficult to listen to both Fields and Church of Broken Glass, I found myself getting bored multiple times throughout it. Nothing struck me as bad, but nothing was exceptionally good either. There was no instant click like there was with The Bastard for me, or even The August Engine which appears the favourite by most. The only 2 songs I truely enjoyed was "Too Soon" and "Fields".

I do not particularily like the male vocals on these albums, I didin't expect to but I went in with an open mind. The female vocals are good however.

I will have to give Fields/Church a few more serious listens. I suspect these albums are an intentional deviation from the past, and more suited to be "grower" albums. Time will tell if this is true or if they are simply just mediocre.

I've collected my turnips from the main stage and have joined Ken in Butchertown. This is some quality material that just takes a little extra effort to absorb. Doing away with the comparing it to The August Engine is in your best interest. It's a case of over analysis leading to displeasure.

I think Fields is pretty solid, and Church of Broken Glass is pretty good. HoM isn't doing as well without the two guitars.

BUMP

Look, Fields is FUCKING EXTRAORDINARY and Church is quite good. Yes, Scalzi is gone but really, this is the next evolutionary step....all in all, it's more evidence of the genius within Cobbet's loins. Surely one of the greatest songwriters currently active, not sure what else he has to prove. The lyrics throughout both albums are great too.

fwiw, I didn't acknowledge the greatness of Fields until about the 5th listen

I haven't listened to this album(s) since the last time I posted in this thread. I almost want to give it(them) another chance due to the extreme amount of "IT(THEY) GROW(S)" that has been said about it (them), but... fuck. I don't wanna let myself down again.

The first two are all you need by these lads. While the last release finally grew on me where I repealed my displeasure quicker than being mounted by Bertha Faye. time has indicated that there's no replay value long term. I have no inclination to listen to this second rate HoM, with The Bastard conveniently within reach.

For some reason all my Hammers of Misfortune CDs are not in their cases. I don't know what the fuck happened.
