new Metallica song posted

Trying to recapture One and Sanitarium and failing miserably. Funny, Trivium sounded like a poor Metallica, and now Metallica sounds like Trivium, so I guess they are actually a poor version of themselves.

I'm hearing this through crappy speakers at work with not a lot of volume. Not a lot going for it at the moment, but I'm eager to find out how that last half of the song will sound through headphones at home. I'm trying to keep my fingers crossed

Can't say I'm bonin' up over this. and the drums don't have that awful sound that they had on st anger, but they still sound flat. what the hell are they paying like 38,100,482 dollars for a producer for when they can't even get a good metal sound? this is pretty tragic, but not as bad as their last abortion.

Though i'm sure this is the best/heaviest thing they've done since Puppetz right?

edit: there's one part near the end where the lead sounds like something Slough Feg would do. That part is fucking awesome. The rest is pretty much garbage. Lyrics are painful too.

I didnt pay attention that closely to the lyrics, but I like how James has cleaned up his tone vocally. The solo fucking wailed and the rest of the song was kind of meh.

I'm wondering (hoping?) this is a purposely overdriven/unmastered track. While the drums weren't as atrocious as St. Anger (can it get any worse?) the snare sound is pretty raw, in a not so good way.

Song wise I was quite happy with the soloing, some cool parts. At least it gets me interested to hear the rest of the new album.

Well, that's a hell of a lot better than them trying to recapture Load and Reload!!! You know that whatever Metallica puts out is going to get played a shitload on the radio, and I think it's in the best interest of more traditional, classic metal bands that their new stuff sound more like the classic Metallica rather than nu-metal or whatever that crap is on the radio these days that they call metal (i.e. Slipknot, Korn, etc.,).

I don't see the need for this song to be nearly 8 minutes long. It kind of plods along for a while, until the 4:06 mark, when some actual riffage insues, which is okay. Then around the five minute mark, fuck yes, speed, riffs, guitar, this is what we've been waiting for. If this song could be centered around the riffs found in the second half of this song, we'd have a pre-black album-style winner here. It's great to hear Kirk Hammet soloing again, that was one the biggest knocks on St. Anger in my opinion, and he's back in great form here.

I think if they were truly going to try and capture their "old sound," they need to stay away from any more of this plodding, semi-clean, slower tempo stuff (which I wasn't even a fan of on some of their earlier material) and write a fucking thrasher. Release me a 4-minute riff-fest and I'll be back in your court, Metallica.

Kind of a yawner....The live version of the new "Cyanide" song is better IMHO, although still not the Puppets style thrash-iness that we're supposed to get. Maybe the rest of the album is all of the heavy fast stuff?

after 15 years of crap i didn't expect anything (maybe to be disapointed again) but after hearing this song i think i'm giving theses old heroes of mine one more chance
I hope this is not the final mix, cause even without the fuzz of the poor sample it sounded just as flat and awful and boring as they have done since load tragedy.

Hate the sound....could have done that better on a commodore 64 back in the 80'ies. I do hope that Mr. Rubin gets his shit together and produces the real stuff for the album. The snare kills all other instruments....horrible.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the song. This is so much back to a mixture of The Black album, load and the Creeping Death mini album. Great Metallica vibe that will shine through when afore mentioned R. Rubin takes the lumps of whatever the hell he has in his ears out and starts mixing.

Say what you want about Hetfield, but he's got more passion in his singing than a lot of self-absorbed people within the business....:notworthy

Later folks....

I think the sound had to do with overcompression to help with streaming. Could be wrong.. but I heard static too.

The snare is just awful and Lars does't sound any better in the studio than he does live now, which is pretty pathetic, just so sloppy, they just need to fire lars already for fucking christs sake because he is the one that is ruining them. I know somebody said Metallica trying to do their classic sound is better than the crap on the radio, for example Slipknot. I am going to tell you to check out the new Slipknot and they are real metal, I'm feel sorry for the naysayers. Corey is one hell of a singer, they have some great riffs on the new disc, some good solos as well, and Lars and many other drummers wish they could play like Joey. If I was Lars, I think I would hang my drumsticks up and call it quits, I would be embarassed if I were him and go hide in a deep dark hole.
Metallica's dead, they can release their new heap of shit while I am listening to slipknot, bloodbath, andromeda, evergrey, gojira, amon amarth, edguy, cynic, pain, and all the other great bands that have something coming out this year or has already been released.

I agree with some of what you are saying, but I'm sorry, I just cant take seriously as a "metal" band a group of buffoons that ripped off their image and mask ideas from a band(Mushroomhead?) who ripped of their masked idea from a band(Gwar?) who ripped off theirm asked idea..well you get the point. Well, at least Gwar knows they are silly and act accordingly.

And just because Joey Jordison(or whatever his name is, the one with the geisha doll mask) can do double-bass it doesnt mean he is a good drummer.

I wish i could hug you right now.

I never said Joey is good because he can do double bass, but he sure as hell can, but I like every single aspect of his drumming and his parts fit their songs perfectly. I'd rather see slipknot in masks and wearing their uniforms then some of these power metal bands that wear all that armor shit and so forth, at least it is not cheesy in my eyes what they do. I use to hate slipknot, but once I heard volume 3, they really drew me in and I finally got them. I don't listen, the key word listen, to bands because of what they wear. Their music is what they are playing and not the clothes they wear, but I have always been a person who could care less about an image a band has, as long as they play good music(but I do hate the whole armor/medieval thing, unless it is done mildy and tastefully). The funny thing is, this is the prog/power forum, and for the most part prog/power bands are all about double bass, so kind of funny you mention that. Joey reminds me of a more tasteful Portnoy with bigger balls.
