New slayer

I was skeptical about their new album. To be honest, I didn't expect much from this bunch of old fucks. Listening to the preview "cult" didn't help.
But I just listened to the whole album and I have to admit that It's surprisingly ok. And the sound is nice, modern yet old school at the same time... Very little gain on the guitars, very dry drums but it works well with the songs. (I hated the sound from the three previous albums btw).

I think it´s a killer album when you get used to the guitarsound,they accually sound like Slayer now, not like a modern version of Slayer like on the last couple of albums.It´s great to have Lombardo back in the band, i expected him to play a little more technical than he does, but i must say he does a fine job on the new album, his groove combined with Kerry and jeffs evil riffs is outstanding and Araya´s vocal is in my opinion just getting better for each record.

When I first heard 'Cult', I couldn't believe how little gain there was - it almost sounds like they were doing the TubeScreamer-into-tube-amp thing but left it on the clean channel

I think Slayer are kinda stuck in the same boat as Metallica - they're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't. The moment they try to change things up a bit they get called sell-outs, but when they stick to the 'Reign In Blood' blueprint they get accused of rehashing old songs. I'd rather they went for the former than the latter. Personally I think 'Diabolus In Musica' had some cool ideas going on, but it got slated, they panicked, and so it got followed up with 'God Hates Us All', which was boring as Hell.

I'm trying to reserve judgement on the new CD 'til I hear it, but from what I've read it's more of the same... bah.

Well if metallica did two albums like diabolus(which is totally great for me) or the boring god hates us all, they would be such a great band.
Better 10000 times a band like slayer than the shitty metallica.
I don't care about changig style or whatsoever, they can even do blues stuff but they must put their heart on things.

I 've listened to christ illusion a couple of times and I must say that I like it quite a lot. There's just something about Tom's voice that I really like. It's really unique. But I still like God Hates Us All even more. I've listened to it about a million times... I especially like the production... but i guess it's just a matter of taste :-D

Tom's voice is strange in a interesting way... I think he "developed" his own style...

I never liked Slayer that much... I think they have some cool tunes...

Kerry did all the rythmguitars, as he did on the last 4 albums.

He used Jeff's strat + amp on this album, and he hates strats.

i hope noone here says they dislike slayer and love bands like Lamb of God and Chimaira becouse it sounds to me like those bands wich i love are heavily influenced by slayer maybe not vocaly lol but musicaly. by the way Devine Intervention is a masterpiece

I will say I haven't liked Slayer's music after Divine Intervention. All albums after that only seem to contain filler songs. Yes, it's Slayer, but none of the songs are even near their classic songs. Not one song from 10 years and 3 albums.

Metallica could have gone for more of a commercial sound and not be called sell-outs... if it wasn't painful as fuck to listen to because they were going for a formula and not a set of good songs in a different vein. Hell, Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia weren't as thrash as RIP or Peace Sells, but they were fucking good non-thrash albums. I'd rather hear people doing stuff that's good at what it is and not good at being just like what something else was, myself, so if the former is the case with this album I'll check it out.

I've been listening to Christ Illusion non-stop the past few days. I was really disappointed with the 3 song EP they released recently. It sounded so thin. But Christ Illusion on a whole sits rather well with my ears.

Clearly it's not going to be their best work as they're approaching 70 years old or whatever. Yet it's also not a pile of garbage like the rest of the great metal giants of their era have been putting out. It's a good album.

Also worth noting are how hilarious the guitar solos are. Not only are they mixed 6 dB too high, but per usual they don't make a lick of sense. So you have comic relief in every song.

And what?! there's a blast beat on the track "Supremist". weird.

Right now my favorite track is Skeleton Christ. Great song, and the guitar solos are extra-retarded on this track.

right on dude, those freakin solo's KILL ME! Bands like slayer, even cannibal corpse just crack me up with their slapstick solos. metal is meant to be taken seriously by everyone.. other than metalheads lol they think we worship goats and sacrifice lambs or whatever just cus we do our solos and blast beats with a straight face, but we all know how funny it could sound sometimes lol

I listened to it a couple times last week and think it's all right. I like it more than GHUA I think. Nothing too memorable to me but not bad. I really didn't like Cult or Eyes of the Insane. Jihad was... interesting. I was expecting it to be heavier and faster but it was an interesting song. The vocals were really boring... Tom sounded the same on every song basically with different lyrics. Not great but not bad.

Hated Divine Intervention....except for Dittohead...

You are almost right. There is one good song: "Point". That track is fuckin' great in my opinion.
