I feel that the first two albums are different from the last three.
Different lineup, different song structures, different feeling, different music quality...

Which do you prefer?

Hmmm, well I agree with you about that.

On one hand you have what I consider to be their best album (Morningrise), and what I also consider to be their worst album (Orchid). On the other hand you have three CDs that I don't consider quite as good as Morningrise but better than Orchid. Agh, it's a tie. :)

If I were to bet on the results of this thread, i would say old because the MAYH lovers will be offended by the misprint, and because Anders Nordin is a member of this forum, and because there's a member named Orchid but not Blackwater Park...

I'd been listening to Still Life and BWP a *LOT* recently.

Now Orchid is in there. I can't get over how (pardon my latvian) FUCKING good it is. Especially Forest of October. The song's easily as complex as their newer stuff, and has some sweet solos in it.

Mmm.. *all* Opeth is good. Worship it equally.

200th post! "Oh wow, aren't you special?"

I would say OLD. I dont know if its becuz those was the ones that got me into opeth. but, hell, morningrise ranks at one of the perfects albums Ive ever heard.
I guess it becuz these parts that "catch" me. in the new ones there arent much of that kind.

Hard to believe how one considers Morningrise the best and Orchid the worst. The albus were written roughly the same time, have the same members and have many similarities. To me it's a mystery how one can recognize the genius of Morningrise but discard Orchid...

Listen to it again... and again...

And I have to say my fave song is In the Mist She Was Standing. From the initial guitar work until the magnificient outro (the last 4 mins) this is a fucking impressive piece... also considering it was the first Opeth song.

Well I voted for the older style, looks like it's very even though.
So that should say something like that it's all just as good?
Sounds right to me, really.

I actually prefer MAYH and Still Life (which I believe is their crowning achievement). I realize that many people have a deep emotional attachment to Morningrise, but for me it simply falls apart in many places - too incoherent, sorry... But, it is not perfect music that we love the most, but the music which is closest, so I believe.

Sorry, haven't heard Orchid yet... or BWP for that matter (only samples). Very hard to find over here...

orchid rulez!
espacially "The Twilight Is My Robe" and
"In Mist She Was Standing"

so you should check it out! :)

BTW I just realized the poll is messed up.
It should have been Orchid + Mrngrs on one.
and MAYH, SL & BWP on the other.

To me, and isn't this all subjective, MAYH is the most powerful and emotional metal album ever made by any band. Of course I think other Opeth releases are brilliant as well, but MAYH is my #1.
This may be because MAYH was the first Opeth cd I ever heard, but I have all of them now and I keep going back to that one.

My order of preference-
1-MAYH
2-BWP
3-Morningrise
4-Still Life
5-Orchid

I Think all of their stuff is really good. I think their best is probably Still Life though. God that album is so delicious! Opens up with a great song The Moor. Its got moonlapse vertigo which is just great. Face of Melinda is a really nice song. Serenity Painted Death. There are alot of great songs on that cd. BWP is also really great. Bleak, Harvest, The Drapery Falls all fuckin great! But then you got morning rise with great songs and...... ahhh their all good fuck it.
