From what my Dad its the musical center of the US, so I was thinking of going to College there (I'm currently a Freshman in High School) So does anyone know any good places to perform to get noticed? Also any good colleges too (locationwise)?

Not really, google would take forever to get all the information, I'd rather have a New Yorker tell me these places.

Your best bet is to look in the Village Voice Newspaper (www.villagevoice.com) for performing gigs in NYC.. have someone send you a copy of the VV newspaper if not check out their website and explore it... but in the newspaper they have a section full of music and advertisements for local clubs and such and local bands.... as for college... depends... what is your major or intended Major... if it's music business or music related I would say Five Towns College in Dix Hills/Long Island... if not let me know what major or your plans etc. I can recommend colleges in this area (long island/NYC)...

I kinda wanna be close to Times Square and stuff but I don't know, I have only been to New York a few times.

NY might be the center of activity for gay musicals, rap and pop music. but for metal, try anywhere in europe. seriously, moving to a new town to get noticed is pretty lame. there are scenes everywhere. and if i remember correctly, maryland has a pretty solid scene.

Yeah but the kind of Metal I'm making isn't in the scene. I make softer Metal at around a Zeppelin level or a little higher. I wanna get a good record label, I'm sure people will be looking there for music like mine. I don't necessarily wanna be mainstream because I'll be told what to do too much.

Maryland doesn't have that much of a scene. Yes I've seen some Metal bands playing in clubs but a lot of bands where I live are usually gay fake Punk and Emo. I do live in Howard County which is pretty rich, almost everyone there is upper middle class or higher.

I don't think I'll go to college in Europe.

Plus also as I said in my prediction of what will happen to mainstream, what I predicted might happen by the time I'm in college so they'll be looking for new sounds like mine.

wtf? I know very little metal culture where I live, VERY little

There's a really healty metal scene in New York, especially in Brooklyn.

Try to network with other bands, and give your CDs out at concerts, or some crap like that. Also, look up indie venues where under the radar metal bands play.

thinking about it... your only a freshman in HS? .... you have a long while before you ever move here to NY... don't plan that far ahead lol you might be a different person when you finally reach the 12th grade.. in the meantime just play with your band, practice your instrument and have fun... otherwise follow my previous post... There are alot of colleges in NYC and since you didn't say what major I can't recommend any other then my personal favorite New York University in The Village where there are alot of musicians and such living and playing gigs for all types of music... this is the Village:

Q: How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

A: Practice, practice, practice!

*self hi-five*

Just go to greenwich village man, it's near the NYU campus and it's rich with jazz clubs and street musicians. Not to mention a healthy supply of headshops :Smokin: and more importantly record stores. Bob Dylan started his career there for christ sakes.
