Two questions:
- Seriously ... is that thing loud enough to be played live (small clubs - maybe even without a PA?)

Did that. Depends a bit on the location. Biggest non-PA gig (well, only the vocals via PA) I played with it was at a packed venue that holds about 200 people. That was stressing it a bit, but venues of that size are usually fully-miced.

And yeah, from a certain point on (little over half-way up) you won't hear much of a volume change but increasing power amp saturation which is good or bad depending on what you desire.

I for one, can't be assed into bringing a full-sized head on tour anymore. Especially since at least 90% of the gigs will have mic'ed/monitored amps.

- do you get a signal out of the preamp when only on standby (for recording with impulses)?

There is no standby.

Have you recorded something through your IR´s ? I always thought my Krank Sound is ok, but after hearing all this awesome stuff..i realized that i succckk as hell...
