newby mixing attempt

Hi

the last few months I have been busy with the recording of our new cd. Its a dutch underground band called "The Embodiment" (http://www.embodiment.nl - the new site isnt ready yet). Well, the drums have been recorded in a studio, cause I didnt know much about using the right mics for drums. Normally we use those rings on the toms to shorten the sound. Well, the engineer thought it was better to not use them. He knows best, I guess?!.. well, now I have been trying to make a mix out of it, but I really have trouble getting anything good out of it.

The complete song: http://peter.wingsofdeath.nu/TheEmbodiment/20060411.TheEmbodiment.wav.mp3
A part of the drums only: http://peter.wingsofdeath.nu/TheEmbodiment/20060411.TheEmbodiment.DrumsMix.wav.mp3
A small sample of the toms, without any plugins: http://peter.wingsofdeath.nu/TheEmbodiment/20060411.TheEmbodiment.TomsOnly.wav.mp3

So, does anyone have any suggestions, how I can fix this and get it right (or right enough hehe)? :u-huh:

Doesn't sound that bad, but it's quiet...What's in your chain? Sounds like it could use some compression and/or limiting on the whole mix and maybe some individual compression on the drums.

The vox are too loud IMO for this type of music, and the guitars sound too distant, but not a bad tone for this style.

Sounds like a good start to me...Just keep tweaking.

thanx! you make me

right now I use a gate on every tom, then a bandfilter to get rid of the empty plastic basket sound of the tom (filter one frequentie with a small band around it), and then an eq to make it sound a bit less empty. There are 5 toms, and I send them to one bus which has a compressor over it. I might try to use a compressor on every tom to get them louder.

I should adjust the guitars to, thanx, you are right about that.. more suggestions are really welcome!
