:OMG: i'm nowhere near as in touch with current happenings and releases as i used to be (that's what this board is for me, to keep up on the latest news and must have cds, etc) so maybe this is old news(?), but i just picked up NIGHTRAGE'S "sweet vengeance"...IT KILLS!!! it's all over the metal map, and i love it! here's what it has...jester race-era in flames guitar melodies...clean vocals(occasionally...)...full-on death blastbeats...overall a mid-paced to full thrash speed wise...and Lindberg on vox. The members are...Iliopoulos(EXUMATION)...Gus G.(DREAM EVIL)...Per M. Jensen(HAUNTED)...Tom Englund(EVERGREY)...Lindberg(AT THE GATES). They bill it as melodic death, but that's selling it short imo it's much more than that :hotjump: ...to my ears, one of the top 3 or 4 releases this year, period.
Also grabbed DARKEST HOUR'S "hidden hands..." after reading about it here...also very good! rapid pace all the way through, with some cool guest musicians from soilwork, the haunted, and Lindberg again. I especially like the instrumental final track, "VERITAS, AEQUITAS". what is that, latin? anyway, along with arch enemy, this is the most new music i've had in ages. and i have COB's "hatecrew death-roll" coming form the end records still...yet another recommendation from this forum. thanks for all the help!

I have had this cd for quite some time now.. And to me it's one of the best releases this year. First of all it's a killer line-up.. Gus G. from Dream Evil on Guitars, T. Lindberg on vocals with Tom S. Englund of Evergrey as a sidekick and The Haunteds drummer...
Next to that the music is unbelievable.. Pounding guitar riffs, very tight rythmes.. And once in a while, but not to often, some nice melancholic melody..
:hotjump:

hey steve...thanks for the reply! cool to see you guys checking the site out. lots of non-homo type love here for all ya'all as you probably noticed. you guys are truly the best and we're glad you are a part of the team (family...)god speed with the new material, and here's hoping you solo all over the freakin' place on it!!!

I love that CD too. The track "The Glow of the Setting Sun" is one of my favorite DM songs ever made. It may be a little too early for a best of 2003 thread, but "Sweet Vengeance" should definately be one of the nominees.

Some other solid death metal albums that came out this year are "Inhumanity" by a band called Mors Principium Est. The band is from Finland but their sound is a little more Swedish sounding. Here are some mp3 sample links if you're interested...

Another album I've been listening to a lot is "Against The Elements" by an American death metal band called Beyond The Embrace. I discovered these guys by accident when I was looking for some mp3's online by another American DM band called Beyond The Sixth Seal. Here is an mp3 link from the bands website if you want to hear them...

Another really solid release I picked up was "Spirits and August Light" by another band out of Finland called Omnium Gatherum. The best songs off this album are "The Perfumed Garden" and "Son's Thoughts". Here's some mp3 links if you wanna hear some of these guys too...

There are a bunch more...Kalmah's "Swampsong", The Black Dahlia Murder's "Unhallowed", Callenish Circle's "My Passion Your Pain", Arise's "Kings Of The Cloned Generation"...I could go all night, but these three albums should all sound good to you if you like Nightrage a lot.

The hype around this album is amazingly true.
It is great stuff.
It has been slighted by some for not being genre breaking but those type of albums are a fantasy and don't exist.
This a genre defining moment.
If you are serious about contemporary metal this is an album that you need to listen to.
Death metal can at times be buried in the quest for ultimate brutality and technical mayhem. Nile is the current example of a band with almost limitless ability that produces almost unlstenable music.
Nightrage rocks you as well as death's you and for me that is a damn fine mix of the brutal and great tunes.
