No Maiden pics on Derek Riggs' website

Derek has been told by Maiden to remove pictures he did for them from his website. That's pretty lame that he can't have the pictures he painted on his own website. After all, his website is his portfolio.

What's everyone's thoughts on that?

All commercial artists post their work online as their portfolio and it's common practice (demo reels, etc.). Now if he's selling them, and he did them under 'work for hire' and since Eddie is an IM copyright, that's another thing.

Looks to me IM were being jerks to Derek. Form his website:

"This link has been removed
by Derek Riggs

This is because Iron Maiden are complaining
about which pictures are on my site,
and then they started quoting contracts at me.

Right now I am too tired and too busy
to work out what they are complaining about
so I have removed the entire link.

So if you want to see the pictures
you will have to buy the book
"Run for Cover, the art of Derek Riggs"
which is available from my website shop.
Enjoy the rest of the site.
Have a better one (than I did)
all the best"

Doesn't sound like IM to me. I'm gonna take a stab that perhaps IM and Riggs have not been getting along lately?

We can forget about Derek doing the new album cover now. He wasn't sure he wanted to do it before, and this is just gonna push him off the deep end.

Shame on you Iron Maiden and your lawyers...treating the guy responsible for your image like this.

You would think that since Maiden relies on merch to make their $$$, they'd want the best. But I guess not..what a bunch of bullocks.

Always wondered. What's the history of Eddie? Who created him? I'm too lazy to google, i'm eating a muffin.

Iron Maiden used a crude mask that they pumped blood out of it's mouth at the end of their gigs that was above the drummer. That's where the name 'Eddie the Head' first came up. Then when searching for artwork for the first album, someone came across the picture Derek did called 'Electric Matthew Says Hello'. They gave Matthew some hair and Eddie as we now know him was born.

I understand that the band may have LEGAL rights to publication of those images, but ...

Derek is LEGEND and the creative genius that spawned the Iconic creature that IS Maiden. I think the Big D should have more options to exhibit and profit from his considerable efforts.

Begs the question: How/why did they allow him to publish his recent book, "Run for Cover"? Apparently ONLY some things are copyrighted, and others not? So, was he "Selling" those images on his website that had to be removed?

God, I truly hate lawyers. We only need a few, the rest are parasites.

Apparently, Riggs posted an image on his site that he did for Maiden that hadnt been used yet, therein lies the controversy.
