Noise compression

There are units which feature both noise gate and compressor in a single box, but they are generally for DI use, not guitar.

I think you mean Noise SUPPRESSION.

Boss makes a fairly decent noise suppressor, I owned one at one point. This effectively eliminates any hum or hissing from the input signal, so you don't always have to turn your volume down when you aren't playing. I actually noticed a world of a difference using this for a couple months.

Rocktron makes an awesome rackmount noise gate, more expensive, but also more effective.

And of course, on any of DigiTech's multi-effects pedals and workstations, there is a pretty good noise gate. (RP50, RP80A, RP200A, RP300A, RP100A, RPx400, GNX1, GNX2, GNX3, GNX4)

Noise gates really help with being able to understand what you are playing much better, because they almost eliminate all of the humming and hissing from the input signal, so you can hear only what you are playing, and no other feedback.

The difference between a noise gate and a noise suppressor, is that the noise gate is more effective IMO.

the boss NS-2 is amazing, you can set the level of the gate, and it doesnt affect sound AT ALL
