Hello, Last night I was bored and a few of my buddies from the radio station liket his Indie band, so it was five bucks, so I went. When I was there a band by the name of Racoo-oo-oon played. They were a noise band, and they were my first. I am curious to see your thoughts on Noise. I really enjoy the complete abstract, then a sort of build up of choas with everyone playing random things and the drumming getting more and more agressive. They would build up for about 2-3 minutes and then just stop. Very interesting. So what's your thoughts on this genre?

Noise = a random assortment of sounds being passed off as a form of music.

I think more people have trouble accepting it as a legitimate form of music than accepting that people actually like it.

not a fan of this "instrumental" form of noise. I do, however like Free Noise a la the new zealand crew of Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, but that's pretty significantly different.

I really need to just fucking buy some of that stuff. For some reason, CDR labels make me wary. He does release some professional cds, right?

I also like instrumental noise, such as the few Merzbow things I've heard. Surely a world of difference from metal and a bit of an adjustment, but it makes for an interesting listening experience.

why does it matter if its a legitimate form of music (whatever that is) or not

I never said it did. But music fans tend to like listening to music, as opposed to dish washers, blenders, and washing machines.

Yeah, he does. But you really shouldn't worry about getting CD-R's... i used to be that way, but after buying some CD-R albums i've totally changed my mind. It almost makes me wonder why someone would even bother with a fully pressed CD. most CD-R releases you still get the artwork all done up nicely, and there is still a label on the CD. eh. I highly reccomend checking that stuff out though, particularly Birchville Cat Motel. BCM was my obsession last year, seriously mind bending stuff.

even ignoring that theres no gospel definition of "music", the best action to take if one feels that way would be to not discuss noise at all rather than pronounce how shitty it is whenever the topic comes up (not saying you do this but some people here do)

yes, but most people have a fairly limited interpretation of the capabilities of any form of sound. I try not to worry about this "is it music" business, and instead on the emotional responses elicited in myself from whatever i may be hearing. It's simpler that way.

Obviously, but it's the internet, afterall.

Because CD-R's last for about 10 years, tops, before deteriorating into a state where they cannot be read. HTH.

this is exactly it! and i've heard that depending on the quality/brand/whatever of the cdr that it could be less than that.

i mean, sure, you're saving lots of costs and allowing yourself to release (in Campbell Kneale's case) pretty large quantities of cdrs with nice art, etc. but what is the cost? i want something that i can revisit a long ways down the line and have it still play!

Mumble: have you heard Buried Civilizations "Tunnels to Other Chambers?" It looked so goddamn interesting but I never bought it and now I can't find it. Where do you prefer to get this kind of stuff from?
