Noise

I think the only CDR albums I have are Grand Belial's Key's "A Witness To The Regicide" and Holy Martyr's "Vis Et Honor." I didn't know they were CDRs beforehand...

Mumble: have you heard Buried Civilizations "Tunnels to Other Chambers?" It looked so goddamn interesting but I never bought it and now I can't find it. Where do you prefer to get this kind of stuff from?

I haven't actually, but i've been meaning to check it out. I often get my stuff from Aquarius Records in SF, they have a wide selection of some pretty experimental stuff. I remember getting one of my BCM albums from www.tonevendors.com as well... really though i often have to look at a bunch of places for what i want. Not very many places carry a wide variety. I got every BCM album i could get my hands on last year, and i have about 10 albums now, probably from 5 or so different places.

I also like instrumental noise, such as the few Merzbow things I've heard. Surely a world of difference from metal and a bit of an adjustment, but it makes for an interesting listening experience.

Intersting is the perfect word to describe it, I havn't came up with a conclusion, but I have some Merzbow, and I plan on listening to it sometime.

* Though it's not like anyone will actually notice disc jitter on noise CD's anyway

Uh...yes you will. Noise is abstract, not retarded. You can tell when someone fucks up in noise (though a lot of times they will say "well I meant to do that there and it's art duh!" but those peopl are just dumbasses) and jitter does affect a noise CD. It's music. It's just not mainstream. I guarantee the same people said "it is not music" about forms of punk when they first came up, etc. I guarantee someone in the future will break "noise mainstream" (hell, Wolf Eyes is pretty popular in the indie scene already) by combining it with crap, but there will always be "true noise" that practices harshness and craftsmanship (believe it or not, noise takes time to get it to sound how you want).

So die plz.

Also, everyone should at least listen to Merzbow - Tauromachine, Masonna - Inner Mind Mystique and Atrax Morgue - Sickness Rerport before even TRYING to diss noise. Though, that doesn't change the fact that a lot of people here will say "oh it's awful" anyway, just to prove me wrong...but I remember first listening to Merzbow: it went from annoying, to compelling, to amazing, to fucking fantastic. Noise is essential music (YES it is music, in my definition, any sound recorded and sold/distributed as "artistic media" is MUSIC).

The above three CDs are ESSENTIAL listening to all fans of experimental music.

Within the Merzbow CD, you will find beats and analog sounds combined with pure white noise washes manipulated through pedal effects, as well as interesting digital editing, creating "loops" (think of a CD skipping, only noise artists usually only loop GOOD moments of tracks) and pulses you would never find in "normal" structured music. Though, that doesn't imply Merzbow material lacks structure...it's just quite loose and undefined. I always hear something new whenever I listen to Tauromachine and the variation is excellent while remaining consistently powerful throughout the whole CD...I mean, with enough listens, you can follow each song's loose structure pretty easily...

Masonna is much noisier than Tauromachine, and I guarantee Maso would constitute a complete turnoff for anyone just getting into the genre. Still, the name of the game is loud, harsh vocal-only noise manipulated through a handful of effects. Very little variation, as opposed to Masami's work as Merzbow, but then again, a lot of people into noise like the spastic, harsh walls created by Maso. In any case, the CD is a fucking experience...and almost an endurance trip.

Atrax Morgue is not strictly "noise"...it's not harsh (that is, it doesn't usually involve blaring mid-high frequency washes), but it also has no beats...so it is sort of confusing. The whole CD was said to be recorded in about an hour (it's ~38 minutes long) with little to no post-editing/overdubbing, because Marco wanted to create the sounds like "a cold manic raptus"...AM is totally surgery-influenced pathological sound. Very claustrophobic and disturbing psychological sounds...a little ambient combined with a little noise and a bit power electronics (steadier noise with vocals/samples/synths). Highly recommended, and listen to it in the dark...

Hahah, one of my buddies just saw Wolf Eyes, and totally loved them. Any artists you recomment 5V?

Wolf Eyes live is supposedly 500 times better than recorded (roughly).

You SHOULD be listening to Wolf Eyes (they put out a CD in 2004...I think...called Burned Mind on the famous Sub Pop Records)...and maybe try out D Yellow Swans, Grey Daturas, etc...some of the more noise-rock type stuff.

For beginner harsh noise I recommend Merzbow's early-mid era material (try Pulse Demon out if you enjoy Tauromachine...it's the next step up in terms of harshness), The Cherry Point, and Prurient.

Let me ask you something... Do you actually KNOW what (mild) disc jitter sounds like? No? Piss off then. I could have said the same for metal, punk, or anything else that's not rather quiet.

Isn't it basically a CD "skipping" due to data being written improperly?

What my point was is that, you can tell if noise jitters, let's not take it out of context.

So what was your point when you said "not that you'd hear jitter in noise anyway"?

I'm just assuming you meant, simply because noise is abstract and "supposed to be random", that you couldn't tell if the data jittered...

Oh OK. I thought you were making some sort of baseless, deriding comment towards the genre simply because you do not and will not listen to it (as the majority of this board probably also does...not).

So yes, I understand, it was a misunderstanding of your intentions. I am so sorry! Now go listen to Merzbow!

5V, I'm looking to explore power electronics a little more, but i don't know where to go with it. Currently, the only artists of the style i like/know a decent amount about are Propergol and Navicon Torture Technologies, and Exsanguinate if they count (not really)... could you reccomend me 3 essential discs?

I didn't say I hated it. You said 'especially,' and I don't see how it is better than the music that they wrote before it.

Exsanguinate is more death indsutrial...NTT actually is sorta like that too at times...especially Church of Dead Girls which hardly has vocals. Gruntsplatter is ace at this type of music.

Try out Mörkermännen...excellent Swedish power electronics/noise...the guy behind the project is a huge old-school death metal fan and you can hear it in the vocals and construction of the tracks. The CD Hell On Earth is fucking awesome. You might also check out the aforementioned Atrax Morgue, Whorebutcher, Control (guy from Exsanguinate doing hateful power electronics), and Omei (Chris from harsh noise act Sickness doing dark ambient/PE).
