Non-Growl Extremities

Grotesque Butchery Rabbit
I'm trying to put together a couple compilations for someone to get them into more "extreme" metal. Thing is, she absolutely refuses to even give growl bands a shot. Any ideas on good tracks? Here's what I'm considering so far:

Nevermore - just about anything
Iced Earth - Hunter or Travel In Stygian
Anthrax - Room For One More
Cathedral - Autumn Twilight
Dragonforce - they all sound about the same (but i like em)
Dream Theater - any of their heavier songs
Hammerfall - Templars of Steel
In Flames - the newer shittier stuff since it's not growly
Iron Maiden - gimme ideas
Megadeth - way too many ideas
Metallica - something off KEA or Ride
Morgana Lefay - Red Moon
Nightwish - Over The Hills or Bless The Child
Passenger - I Die Slowly
Porcupine Tree - Strip the Soul
Probot - good collection of stuff here maybe
Testament - something off one of their greatest hits albums
Tool - Cold And Ugly
Sentenced - something off The Cold White Light
Soundgarden - Outshined or Rusty Cage
Warmen - not sure
Fozzy - All That Remains or Enemy
Devin Townsend - Bad devil

and a hidden track of..... VITAL REMAINS... just to get her awake :headbang:

the definition of a growl can mean many things for different people.
some people say its just the more agressive/raspy tone in the voice.
nevermore uses such tone alot in their music.

good choices for iced earth, since they have alot of this.

how into metal is she?
cause my g/f said that but i showed her some prog/death cross-overs (into eternity) and she liked it alot.

also if you are putting soundgarden, porcupine tree, tool, and nightwish on there, its not that 'extreme' at all.
also make sure that the dragonforce is something off the new album.

otherwise i think its a really good start

by growl i mean stuff like Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, The Haunted, Bloodbath, etc etc.

Warrell still can hit a nice range of notes and doesn't rely on just cookie monstering it.

She likes the music of a lot of the stuff I like (see the list above), especially older In Flames, but she hates the cookie monster stuff and the 'inaudible' wailings (Cradle of Filth)

so where's the "extreme" metal on that list? nevermore is just about the most "extreme" band that has zero growls/screams/etc. (unless you count the super high shit i guess). i just see a bunch of powermetal and 80s stuff. if Hammerfall is more "extreme" than the "metal" they've been listening to already, i wonder just what the fuck they've been listening to and calling it "metal"......cynical asshole comments aside, yeh go with nevermore. but if they absolutely refuse to listen to more "extreme" vocals, they are limiting themselves to a very small portion of what metal has to offer, and most of it is pretty derivative and boring as shit.

Sounds like she's not into metal at all.

I would give up trying to make her like your music. I've found that that is a pretty worthless and fruitless adventure.

If I was trying to get a chick into heavier music. I included some bands that have both clean, growled vocals. Maybe that would eventually get her into growls.

Orange Goblin-Blue Snow
Acid Bath-Paegan Love Song
Opeth-The Funeral Portrait
Candlemass-Bewitched
White Zombie-Thunder Kiss '65
Corrosion of Conformity-Clean My Wounds
Theatre of Tragedy-Bring Forth ye Shadow
Mercyful Fate-Witche's Dance
Helloween-Mirror Mirror
Neurosis-Stripped
King Diamond-At The Graves
Sanctuary-Eden Lies Obscured
Orphanage-Chameleon
Overkill-Blood Money
Solitude Aeturnus-Dream of Immortality
The Gathering-Eleanor
Soundgarden-My Wave
Melvins-Zodiac
Slayer-War Ensemble
Alice In Chains-Sick Man
Cathedral-Grim Luxuria
Tiamat-Cain
Lacuna Coil-Honeymoon Suite
Iron Maiden-Aces High
Type of Negative-Christian Women
Jag Panzer-Vigilant
Helmet-Iron Head
Black Sabbath-Children of The Grave
Fear Factory-Piss Christ
Brainstorm-Maharaja Palace
My Dying Bride-Like Gods of The Sun
Crowbar-Awakening
Amorphis-The Orphan
Demons & Wizards-Poor Man's Crusade
Katatonia-Ghost of The Sun
Nevermore-We Disintergrate
Devin Townsend-Depth Charge

I'd let her hear Dark Tranquility 'Character', though it has gowled vocals the music has keyboards, electronics.

Go with some Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Edguy, Sonata, Heavenly, Dark Moor, Demons and Wizards, Adagio, Symphony X
Start it off with power metal, slowly leading into heavier more thrashy perversions and then to prog. Towards the middle put some straight trash and melodic DM. Finally put some viking black death, and finish it off with some heavy stuff ex... Hate Eternal Bloodbath.
Slowly lead from power metal into death metal, one extreme to the other with everything inbetween. That way you'll show an example from each sub genre and give em a chance to choose what sub genre of metal they choose to get into the best.

I just do karaoke to Sting songs with my best Jeff Walker impression. That'll get her to at least touch your penis. Trust me, it works. And it opens the doors to death metal. But she'll only pretned to like it...but it doesn't matter because...she's a penis toucher now.

none of that stuff is really extreme metal....

but my advice is this: dont waste your time trying to get people into the music you like, enjoy it for what it is. metal is something that is sought out by individuals, not propagated by a mass of fans.

i'd just pick your favorite bands from the following genres:
traditional, thrash, power, prog.
won't find any growling there.

btw the bands you mentioned, excluding carcass, have really shitty growls.
to have a good growl you gotta understand what they are saying pretty easily. its about articulation.

show her some into eternity also, that'll really be good :)

1.) I'm well aware nohting in that lineup is really "extreme", but the whole point is to lead her into extreme stuff.

2.) I don't want a penis toucher, this is my wife's sister we're talking about (And I'm gonna try and get my wife into it at the same time)

3.) Karaoke Carcass style fuckin' pwns!

4.) I HAVE to put some hevy devy on there.

And well you should. The song you're listening to right now ("Storm") might be good. 'Cause he starts screaming stuff near the end but it's otherwise so incredibly melodic and it demonstrates how screamier stuff can add intensity to something rather than just be used to make something sound scary. I actually just bought that CD (Accelerated Evolution) yesterday. :D I'm new to the Devy stuff (other than the Vai album he's on) even though I've seen him live, just finally getting into it now (I also picked up newest SYL).

From the random DTB stuff I've sampled (in trying to decide what CD to get first), Ocean Machine seems the easiest to listen to from a more melodic less aggressive standpoint, but of course there's still some aggressive vocals in there 'cause its Devin. I think that's the best way to acclimate someone to more aggressive vocal styles, whether it be gritty melodic vocals or full growling, is just gradual exposure. So a lot of the suggestions that have both that have already been mentioned are really good IMO, Into Eternity, Opeth, Orphaned Land.
