Noob question on unbalanced output

Is it normal to connect unbalanced outputs to a reference amp/monitors?

In this case:

Apogee Duet----->Alesis RA-100(till something better)---->monitors.

Normal right?

I don't think it matters much if the distances are kept short and you don't cross over powerlines (hum/buzz) or ethernet/firewire cables (clicks at even intervals, about 8 times a second).

Yes. I am pretty sure the UX2 I have doesn't spot balanced outs. But the way I understand it is you can still "float" the 3rd wire and accieve simular results as having the whole thing balanced.

I'm not sure what this means. "float"?

I got a friend that lives in Miami. He has a free Alesis RA-100 to give me. I got some spare monitors so I thought I'd hook it up if possible. I've been using phones since I got the Duet.
