The only place it divides the metal community in two parts is on the internet. They became the "cool to hate" band by a bunch of younger hipster pretenders, mainly ones who were introduced to the genre through black metal. I'm not a big fan of the album or band really but its where they found their true sound and stopped pretending to be something they weren't. Cowboys From Hell on the other hand is faaaar from being a classic and is mostly crap outside of 2-3 good songs.
i agree with most of this post, especially the part about Cowboys(which i dont even consider be be proper/real thrash btw) but id say they did indeed find their sound with Vulgar(and even "perfected" it with the two that followed). That sound just happened to be "tuff guy" groove metal. They are the pioneers of that subgenre so i wouldn't say they were trying to be something they weren't when they ended being exactly what they always were at heart.Walk on home, boy. Haha, gotta love these corny lyrics. The problem with Pantera was they always went with the flow. There was no 'true' sound of theirs, the band just wanted attention, and they finally got it with Cowboys from Hell, which was their take at thrash metal. Oddly enough, it was released at the time of thrash metal prominence. I've never taken this band seriously, I like CfH but will never place it among thrash classics. You either set your heart on doing something you feel with your whole body, or you just sell your product to mass audience. I just can't like a band that changed their sound drastically only to get money and media coverage.
