DZO-NGA - The Sachem's Tales

I agree, I think too much emphasis is placed on whether it's derivative of this or that these days. If it's spirited and passionate and has great song-writing, that's all I'm fused about. Unfortunately, a lot of the stuff doesn't have the same spirit as the originals, so I appreciate why the community backlashes against it. And I get that there is undeniably a lot of metal that is a pale imitation of its influences. But that's to be expected since the genre (especially black and death) is so oversaturated at this point.

On the other hand, Netherstorm is one of my favourite releases of this year and the best "symphonic" black metal album I've heard in many years. Is it anything new? Of course not, it sounds like it came right out of the mid 90s and it's clearly heavily indebted to early Emperor and Obtained Enslavement, but it fucking rules so I don't really care. Similar thing with Communion's At the Announcement which is essentially a modern update of early Sodom and Sarcofago, but fuck if it doesn't obliterate everything in its path.

Personally I am tired of all the ultra dissonant black/death that's coming out these days and I have somewhat grown tired of the cavernous Incantation worship, but even some of that is still good. I have listened to a lot of albums from this year and a lot of it is mediocre/decent, but there's still plenty of good shit as well that I will probably still be listening to years from now.

What bothers me more than bands who don't try anything new are bands who don't try anything new in the context of their own discography, Master for example. I have nothing against bands who stand by a tried and true formula, but sometimes their new music just becomes redundant.
