So, would it be unrecommended to buy a bomber of Stone RIS thats obviously been sitting in the store's fridge since the spring when it was brewed? I don't think its in a place that would put it in danger of overexposure to sunlight (bottom of the fridge, not near a window). This is a total n00b question, but could the lights of the fridge itself cause any skunking, or are there any other concerns that would make it a risky purchase?
I think you'll be fine with that especially if it's in the fridge. I like it really fresh, but some people like it less hoppy and more malty. Both ways are solid.
had a Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA the other day. it was good, but honestly the regular Stone IPA with California/American hops completely blows it away. still probably the best english (style) ale ive had (which isnt a lot to be honest).
English Ales are still really good. They just aren't in your face like American stuff because it's lower alcohol (most of the time). A subtle English Pale Ale is a great beer to drink while relaxing or watching football, and since the abv low and it has enough subtle flavors to be ace.
Scouring this thread for a bit and the snobby beer scene seems like a lot of work. I don't mean this in a bad way, I just don't think I'd have the patience. Back when I used to drink beer I'd hit a store and either a) pick up something I knew I liked or b) grab something with a name/label I liked. That was it.
I know I'll never be as knowledgeable about beer as Peters, for example, I'll just keep looking to the true experts for recommendations and enjoy what I enjoy. It would be a hell of a lot of work, and I need to focus my efforts on other things for now.
Honestly the best thing I did to become a beer geek was to start homebrewing, then take a class to be a judge. You learn so much about every style and you get to try tons and tons of different beers; I'm sure there are beer clubs around where you live, and they might let you take the class (even if you don't take the exam).
Celebrator, Salvator, Optimator, and Weihenstephaner Korbinian. I find American ones just a tad too sweet. However, I did love Left Hands smoked doppelbock quite a bit.
Had a Boulevard Double-Wide IPA tonight. I'm starting to think I'm not a big fan of the IPA. I never seem to enjoy them like I do a Belgian like Delerium Tremens et al.
However, regardless of how I dislike the taste, I'm pleasantly blasted.
Just got back from the Mill Street brewery store with a growler of their new seasonal, a rauchbier. Much more balanced than the classic Aecht Schlenkerla brew, still unmistakably smoky, maybe suggestive of bacon.
After trying several different belgian ales I think I've decided that while they arent bad, they don't really do it for me.
I was in the mood for a dessert beer earlier and poured myself a Bell's Double Cream Stout. Hit the spot, but not the kind of beer you could drink a bunch of in a row.
ah yes; time to try the first batch of christmas brews
one of these is icelandic which is exciting as i've never tried icelandic beer before. the rest is the usual mix of swedish, british and american. there's a huge selection of seasonal beer right now so i need to do several rounds of this
