Now that it's out in theaters, here's one 'official' thread to save us having a dozen different ones scattered around the forum.

Thoughts on the movie? Love it? Like it? Hate it? How could they have made it better?

Good, good, very good, like the predecessors. I'll save the grade "great" to the Extended cut. All in all, the best movie trilogy ever. Star Wars can suck my hairy balls.

-Minor Spoilers Here In (maybe major for those who haven't read the book, but let that be a punishment for not reading it. :p ) - Be Warned -

Good:
-Battles
-Theoden's War Rally (I wanted to shout "death!!!" in the theatre. :D )
-Shelob
-Destruction of Mordor
-Nearly everything, even the end credits were cool.

Bad:
-Christopher Lee was cut out.
-Aragorn as King, it doesn't really suit him, but I guess that's the point.
-The dead. They were way too green.
-Ending was a bit too sappy.

I am speechless. I'm still in awe of how spectacular this movie was.

The opening scene with Smeagol and Deagol perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the film; dark and powerful.

I can't wait to see it again, only this time, WITHOUT a hangover!

Best of the trilogy, and for that, best trilogy ever. Yarz, tis even greater than Star Wars.

I was going to cry, but I tried hard and kept the eyes at just watery stage. (my friends would have ridiculed me) It's a miracle really, I cry at damn near every film that tries to be sappy. I was quite surprised to find I was on the brink of tears actually...I guess it just goes to show how effective and powerful the characters in the films were. Especially the hobbitses, and then, especially Samwise....Sean Astin was undoubtedly the star of that film. Best performance this year easily.

And yeah, best film. Easily. ;o)

My major grip about the picture is the searchlight of Sauron, what the fucking fuck was PJ thinking? He's got some great ideas (I especially liked the battering ram, forgot the name) but that searchlight? Its beyond cheesy, its stupid. Other qualms about stuff that was left out, I hate how they make Gollum this sympathatic caracter and the whole 'go home' thing I didn't like. I also disliked how they turned Denethor into an evil caracter, I always thought of him as Middle-Earth's king Lear. No Christopher Lee is of course a major fault.

Otherwise great movie.

Huh? Turned Denethor into an evil character? Check your book. In the movie he was nearly exactly like in the book: a proud, bitter, untrusting old man, driven insane by the (presumed) loss of his two sons. Most that happens with Denethor or what he says is straight out of the book.

im so glad there is a thread like this :p

i LOVED the movie, i was prepared to absolutely hate it as i hated the two towers, but i just went out completley satisfied. i cried , too, didnt see that coming. i loved gollum, as usual, loved eowyn and didnt think the "i am not a man!" was that cheesy... LOVED aragorn's rejection of eowyn... even thought liv tyler did a good arwen at the end, if only her part had been that exclusively. i thought denethor was great, gimli wasnt as much of a clown in this movie, legolas just pulled off one stupid look-at-me-i'm-cool trick (climbing through the arrows)... aragorn was great... but Eowyn and Gollum were the best.

i went out of FOTR and TTT raving about all the changes and everything that was wrong, but just said "no comments, it was perfect" of this one.

was it just me or were there like 10 parts in the movies when it seemed frodo and sam were going to kiss passionately?

Actually, Legolas jump off the beast right afterwards was a much more "look-at-me-I'm-cool" trick. :p

I thought the movie was great though. And yes, the dead were a bit too green. That and coming off the pirate's ship.... Arrrrgh Matey!

Didn't Jackson direct 'The Frighteners'? Weren't all the ghosts in that movie green too?

And thus the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the best trilogy ever. I do have a lot of complaints about this movie though. Peter Jackson changed way too much, this is a list of my complaints (that I can remember):

How did the Palantir end up in the water?
Having Treebeard guard Sauruman was a pretty lame was to leave him out of the film. Oh well I suppose it was just to cut time.
The Palantir is not a magnet.
Why did Golum have to talk to himself again, wasting time telling us the SAME thing he told us in the end of the Two Towers, about leading them to Shelob and such. Waste of screentime.
Why did Frodo send Sam away? He never would have done such a thing!
The whole Cirith Ungol part seemed rushed.
Who was that big melty looking orc supposed to be?
Why did Gandalf have to beat up Denethor? Gandalf would never have done such a thing!
Denethor 's character seemed to be made into a pig, without any honour whatsoever. It was he who ordered his own execution, not running off being a human fireball.
How come the battles of Pellenor Fields were so bright? Tolkien knew dark times called for dark skies.
Legolas and Gimili's counting gimick was repeated, and shouldn't have been, I would rather see something new. Legolas taking down the oliphant was great though.
The dead army reminded me of Pirates of the Carribean.
Why would Theoden's men camp so close to the dead army's lair, without any foreshadowing of what was there or anything like that. Bad scripting. Also, how did Elrond get there so fast. It took the fellowship a damn long time to get that far.
Having physical marks on Frodo's neck from the chain carrying the ring was a very cheesy idea.
Some of the CG looked like I was watching a video game.
When Grond (that big doorbreaker thing) smashed through the gates at Minas Tirith I was expecting to see Gandalf face the Witch King. One of my favorite parts of the books. Instead a bunch of trolls jump in like a team of football players. Boo!
The twist ending, where BOTH Frodo AND Golum fall off the crack at mount doom was stupid. I can see how it was nice to show Sam saving Frodo, reaching his arm down the same way Frodo saved Sam from drowning in The Fellowship, but the original ending is perfect. Gollum gets the ring, is so happy he victory dances right off the cliff, thats the dramatical irony right there.
When Golum finally fell in the lava, he looked way to happy for someone disintegrating into molten lava!
The ending where everyone comes to visit Frodo at his bed, seemed way too long, Gandalf didnt even know what to do with his hands! hah!

Well that's about all that I can remember. It would have been cool to see the house of healing, and Faramir and Eowen getting together a bit more, but I guess I will wait (and count the days) for the Extended Edition.

-end rant-

Best movie of the year, if just a little bit of a dissapointment for me.
