Can someone tell me exactly WHY Conception rules? Admittedly, I am a power and melodic fan, but that being said I have enjoyed past performances from Superior, Balance of Power, and Evergrey.

What I saw:

A vocalist who, in the metal field, is generic and quite boring at best. Are you guys really telling me that this is a vocal "legend"?? And please don't say "emotion". He's as dry as an 11 year old twat.

They have a shit-hot guitar player. Given. But there are other bands with that.

They've had 3 or 4 cds that few people bought. Sales don't dictate "legend".

Drumming was average.

Bass was average and performance less than average.

Song selection was not very memorable or captivating for non-fans.

They're not even top bill in Europe, the motherland. My buddy from Germany was sending me conception cds that he picked up for less than 3 Euro back in the day.

What is the deal?

Look, I'm not intending to slag on the fans here or the band itself, but I'm sort of confused (and tired) of this worship. Be a fan. Fine. Be a HUGE fan. But use the term "legendary" sparingly (see also: "godly", "incredible" et. al)

I'm happy you all got to see the band you've wanted to see and I like obscure stuff too. Kreyson, Scanner, Heaven's Gate, whatever. But if they reformed or played at PPVII, I'd not use the worship terms in a public forum that I'm seeing here. I'd realize that "hey, I just saw a band that I've idolized and worshiped" but at the same time I'd also think twice before using some wacky term to frame their show in front of other fans. "Dude, the Heavy Pettin' show was legendary in every way". Um...no, I wouldn't do that.

What gives?

I think it's simply a matter of coming from a prog background during Conception's peak era. While I do enjoy the big power metal acts, I still revere Conception because of what I feel when I listen to their music. "Flow" was one of the top 5 releases of the entire 90's as far as I'm concerned.

Glenn H.

They have some nice bits, but way too many "haven't they already played this song?" moments for my taste. I'm also not a huge fan of that style of vocals.

Agreed 100% with Glenn. Also, there's something special about them that makes them sound incredible. It's just this feeling, this vibe... I dont know... The riffs are amazing and the vox are full of emotion. If you think he sounds like an 11 year old twat, there's something wrong with ya.

And according to Glenn a few months ago, it's the perfect music to listen while having sex. Although I know some freaks on this board would rather listen to bands like Cryptopsy while "on the act".

Exactly, Glenn..those of us 'old school prog fans' who loved Conception's music 'back in the day' got a lot more out of their set than folks who weren't involved in the genre back then. I guess you had to be there back then, to see why it was such a magical thing for some of us now.

LOL, as you all probably saw on my review website(http://home.nc.rr.com/ppvi/) I wasn't blown away by them at all. I am not a fan of Roy Khan for the same reasons you mention, he just does not seem all that interesting..but like i said earlier, it's a matter of opinion and taste..

I wasn't and still felt that it was one of the most special moments in life! ;)

They have a groove. They have excellent songwriting. They have a feel that is really pleasing to the ear, while also dazzling with a bit of virtuoso tendencies. No, it's not anything you'd need to be Dream Theater to pull off. But not anyone can walk onto that stage and sing those songs the way Khan does, or as high and clear and strongly as he can. Anyone can play the notes on guitar, but you gotta have that intangible to play the way Tore Ostby can. It's like all the arguments about Jimi Hendrix, man. For so long, I've argued that Jimi ain't the greatest guitarist ever, simply cuz anyone can pick up a guitar and make the sounds he did and play the songs he did. But they will always argue against me, saying that noone had the 'feel', the intangible, that made Jimi, Jimi. The drums aren't speed metal, or Richard Christy precise, but they've got a perfect groove, are always played appropriately, and fit the song exactly the way they should.

These guys don't overplay, or underplay. They serve the song. They write great melodies and riffs, and make songs that have a great vibe and feeling to them.

And sometimes, you just don't need all those 64th notes in there, or the very heaviest chunking amplifier, or the highest pitched voice, to enjoy a great song.

sometimes, late at night, I pray roy will suffer laryngitis, spelled correctly, to save the world some not-so-small amount of suffering. Conception probably wasn't as good as the Subway I ate during their set.

That being said, I'm glad everyone who wanted to see them and enjoyed their set had a good time, but their singer was enough to drive me right out of the venue.

I despise kamelot too. :P

Thumbs up for the rest of the weekend :D

Probably the best show i PP history, IMO...

I love conception... Their sound is SO unique, without being weird.. I mean, they are pretty straight foward, for the most part, and have so much personality.. They sound like Conception and that's it...

LOL...hell yes to having sex to Cryptopsy!!!!!..

Well, that was well explained I guess. I don't think it's a "dead horse" as per one of the earlier posts. I've seen an awful lot of worship but sparingly few criticisms. and for the record, I was there back in the day but nobody was really recommending the cds to me. I saw them. I asked if I should buy them, but I was always steered to other bands such as Bonfire, Victory, PC69, and others.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the show. I guess I'm just looking for a little more "level-headedness" in the review of the show and of the band.

And for the record, the perfect cds to bang to would be more like Tiamat (for that sexy groove), Quiet Riot w/ Paul Shortino on vocals for that retro groove, or Vain is always good for that sleazy stuff. And you know daddy likes the sleazy stuff..... :)
