Ok, I'll be Mr. Disrespectful here...

When I picked Flow as my favorite disc on the '90's in my now somewhat legendary article, I said it was the songs. No flashy playing, no standard prog metal tricks, just catchy songs that groove. I still stand by that. Flow is a masterpiece.

It always fascinates me after every one of these shows where people have to go on and on about a band they don't like, and how they get personally offended if other people did like them. Whether it's Conception at this PP, or any band that features a guitar solo at Nearfest, a certain segment gets up in arms if everyone's perceptions of a show does not fall exactly in line with theirs. I never expect to love every band at a multi-band festival. I personally cannot stand Nightwish, but still gave them a chance at PP 5. Still didn't work for me live, so I went out and drank with people in the lobby. I certainly didn't get upset that there was a room full of people digging the show. I was happy for people that got a chance to see their favorite band live.

I sponsored Conception. I was damn happy to do so. I never thought I'd get a chance to see them live, and thank Glenn for the opportunity. This is probably the only time we'll ever see them at PP, so it was pretty damn special for a lot of us. It all comes down to opinion, and none of us are right or wrong. Some folks loved Conception, some did not. I'm sure you could find similar opinions about every band at the show. This is the way things go...

For those that didn't get it.... that's just it. You didn't get it cause it wasn't your thing.... that's the way it goes. No biggie.

[personally, last year I thought Edguy was one of the goofiest things I had ever seen/heard, especially after all the RAVING I had heard about them, and left by the time they hit the third song - but I just let it go cause I knew it wasn't my thing.

And IMHO, Khan is wasted in Kamelot (although I have not heard the latest CD yet).

PS - Dave - THANKS to you and Mare for sponsoring Conception. You RULE.

Pain of Salvation also made me want to tear out my pubic hair and light my asshole on fire. But then, I think that was the general concensious of everyone who was not enjoying their set.

Though like people say, you take the bad with the good at these shows, since it's a festival of both styles, and make offhanded moronic comments like the one above that are probably bound to make people hate you. :D

When I spoke to Kahn at the Pre party I told him how excited I was to be seeing Conception live, and they did put on a great show. But I also told him how much of a master piece The Black Halo was to me anyways. I thought Conception was pretty great, The Flow songs were the highlight of the performance for me, as I have been into Flow more than the other albums of Conception. I think that its all just personal preference. Like Gamma Ray,Stratovarius and Blind Guardian did absolutely nothing for me and thats cool, just not into those bands. To each his own

First, Roy Khan is a legend, IMO. He's certainly not generic, in fact his voice isn't what you'd think of as a metal voice. Much too smooth.

Second, Conception's sound is probably dated if you got into the metal scene after the late 90s, or if you are strictly into power metal. But if you were into the scene back then, Conception was probably THE band most people would want to see perform one more time.

Kamelot IMO is better.
I agree, but holy crap, do you think your signature is big enough there, buddy?
You typed one line of text, and I can't see all of it and your sig together without scrolling down.

PoS and Conception are two of my all time favorite bands.... :) Your taste sucks :loco:

The show was excellent...for those sitting down. The songs were groovy and Tore has both shredding ability and taste, a rarity in most guitar players. Roy Khan's voice was its dry self, yet thick with emotion AND he didn't sing any notes he couldn't hit. The bassist seemed to be in the wrong band. While the rest of the band was feEEeeling it, the bassist was rocking out as hard as anyone I saw all night. The drum beats were in good taste as well. Overall, I'd enjoy listening to them while sipping cocktails with my lady friends, maybe in a schwank club. At a metal fest, they kinda come out of left field and even come across as a tad boring. All in all, I thought the change of pace would have been inappropriate had it been any other fest but Prog Power and anywhere but Earthlink.

Pain Of Salvation are one of my favorite bands.....oddly one of the few of my favorite bands I have in common with a good bit of other people here. :p

and for those who don't know, the Gladiator Soundtrack was composed specifically to be the best music to have sex to. Scientifically proven to give longer, harder orgasms 4 times per spin of the disc.

I think a better song selection would have helped. They left their three most accessible power metally songs unplayed(Wolf's Lair, Water Confines, and Would it Be the Same)

They could have cut a few of the slow ones. They started the show with four or five slow ones in a row and I think that just killed it for the power metal fans.

But then again, you are here to be different than all Mr. Pumpkin. We enjoy having you here being one of our most.... distinct members... :p

I'll repeat what a lot of people here said. It's all about the groove and catchy tunes. I just started listening to them right after Powerfest, and I think their last two albums are quite good. To me, the first two sound WAY too much like Dokken wanna-be (even Khan's voice) for me to take them seriously.

I think Khan has one of the best male studio voices I've ever heard. I like his performances less live though. Though he still sounded really good this year.

Tore Ostby blew me away. I had never heard of him before. While watching him with DC Cooper, I thought, "Holy shit. That's guy is good." Then watching him with Conception, and comparing his playing with others I came to two realizations: 1) There were plenty of guys up there who could play licks as well as Tore, and 2) Not one of them made it look so effortless. He looked real casual as his fingers were moving so fast that they were a blur. Everybody else I saw was definately concentrating when they were doing to shredding.

I thought they put on a good show. The bassist was disturbing, but certainly entertaining. I REALLY like a show where the people on stage look like they are having fun, and Conception did look like they were enjoying themselves. They sounded good.

I think the thing that made them "so great" was that this was probably a once in a lifetime chance for me to see this band. If this was a band that was still putting out CDs, it would not have been any better than say Stride. It was one of those concerts where you know you are seeing something special; something nobody outside of that auditorium will ever likely see. That doesn't happen very much these days. How much of Angra's set, Strato's set, or even Therion's set was unique to PP? This was special in the same way that POS's set was special last year because they let the audience pick the setlist. Those unique performances are always the best, even if you aren't a huge fan of the music.

YMMV

It is beating a deadhorse on this board. Some people can see no wrong in prog and some feel same way about power. There are some like me who lean towards prog but enjoy some of power(usually the heavier stuff like brainstorm, tad morose, symphorce, manticora) while others might be like that but lean more towards power.

You win some, you lose some. I make it a fact to check out a couple songs from each of the bands. Pain of salvation has been my favorite of every band I saw at the 2 fests I have attended. I know they don't win others over at all. I could care less.

People seem to let other's opinions bother them way too much sometimes on this board.

Again, I'm not running on anyone's taste. I'm just trying to see why people are so excited. We've all seen so many bands live and I just find it hard to believe that this performance is what people settle for as "godly". However Yippee38 probably made it the clearest in the final paragraph of that post. That's all I was looking for.
