I actually would LOVE to know as well. I have tried researching before but wasn't keen on the results I was getting, other than the Oktava site - but I may buy them used (modded). Also, I hear the knock-off ones (they used to sell at GC for a while, some time ago) are better? I could swear I have seen Joey say his were the Chinese (I think?) ones and they do sound better.

Yeah their are the legitimate ones you find through most dealers, and through Oktava's store online of course. But there are also some other ones, there is a complicated mess involving Oktava and another guy/company that was licensed to manufacture and sell them but he made them differently - a lot of people have said those sound better than the original, actual Oktava 012's. If you do a search on google about it I'm sure you can find a few websites with some information regarding the whole deal. Guitar Center was actually selling the licensed ones a long time ago. I'm pretty certain that these days it's harder to find the licensed ones anyway though - the original Oktava 12's will be easier to find.

Chinese ones sounding better than the real ones is complete bullshit.
Chinese ones sounds like your regular shitty -insert chinese brand here- SDC if not worse.
A lot of people have no idea what they are talking about.
