Old School Death Metal - My Band/Mix

I gotta say, unlike someone said in the first posts of the thread: I'm loving the vocals! Good stuff man, really enjoyable old-school DM. I'm working on a demo of a Death metal band who also have some oldschool influence but they're more on the other side of the atlantic (deicide influenced) check it out and tell me what you think http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/rate-my-mix-tone-threads/495368-some-death-metal-demo-works-please-some-input.html

great guitar tone, I'd like to know like Astrikos, what did you do besides using the hm-2?

Here's the specifics on the guitars:

Guitar (Schecter C-1 Blackjack on right channel, Gibson SG on left) ->
Boss HM-2 - Level, Low, and High all at full, distortion at 11 o'clock ->
5150 green channel - pre gain at 5.5, low 4, mid 3.5, high 6.5, post gain at 3 iirc, resonance at 6, presence at 6.5 ->
Splawn 4X12 cabinet (miked front, not back, of cab with 2 mics on 2 diff speakers) - SM57 on Eminence Governor in top left, Audix OM2 on Eminence Man o War in bottom left ->
Alesis io26 audio interface

The Man o War is a little louder than the Governor, but I left the levels the same in Sonar (DAW). I then used Voxengo CurveEQ to partially match the tone of the Governor to the guitar tone from Drowned by Entombed. Essentially, CurveEQ added maybe 6dB of bass, took out some low mids, and maybe added a bit of high mids. I then used that same EQ curve and put it on the Man o War track too.

That's it for the guitars. The overall EQ changed some when I altered EQ ont he master bus and during the mastering process.

Hope that helps. The heart of the tone is HM-2 into slightly overdriven clean channel and CruveEQ to get the equalization right.

SlipkyesBass, thanks for the compliment on the vocals. Glad you like the song too. And yeah, that band you're recording clearly has some old school influence. I like it!! \m///

Astrikos, no problem!

Slipkyes,
Actually, it's 3 guys total, including myself. And we have played live once. It was before this demo was recorded.

We signed up for a myspace, but it looks terrible because we have no idea how to make it look cool haha. Any advice?

for basic stuff, use a page like pimp-my-profile, I did one of my band's myspace page with pimp-my-profile and I have absolutely ZERO graphic design skills and it turned out pretty cool, check it out: http://www.myspace.com/intestinalblasting

this is my other band, it was done by a professional graphic designer with some experience doing band sites so it's much better http://www.myspace.com/adintra

Try it out, it's really easy. Although new myspace users can only have 2.0 profiles, I have no idea how to work/edit those, I don't even like the design of those, I'm a fan of traditional myspace profiles, a bummer new users don't have that choice anymore. http://www.pimp-my-profile.com

Please let know if you manage to make something, or Pm me if you need any help, but as I said I can't help much on 2.0 profiles

Fucking sweet. You've pretty much nailed the sound you're going for. Interesting tone you're getting running it through the 5150. Very Entombed indeed, though for HM-2 sounds I've always prefered Dismember, but they are both fucking great. Leads kicked all kinds of ass as well, completely nailing the feel of the old school. The low growls towards the end just reeked of Hypocrisy! (In a very good way)

If there is anyway to get a hold on the demo, I'd love to have more of this stuff to blast.

Slipkyes, thanks for that myspace info. I will take a look at it all. Thanks for offering to help, as well.

The_Unavoidable,
Thanks a lot! The demo is technically done, but I'm considering doing a slight re-mix once I get my Steven Slate samples. I feel like the snare could be a bit brighter and the kick maybe a bit quieter. I'm not sure. I'll let you guys know, but we will definitely be selling copies and/or sending it to distributors, so you will be able to have a copy soon! We have a demo/EP cover as well but I feel like we have to get mroe art for a booklet somehow.
