Love this nice um acoust (?) albums of theirs and would like to know of other bands and albums that run along the same vein :kickass:

Thanks in advance :headbang:

wow great fucking album...i love how a band can put out something completely different than their other releases and still sound so very good. i like the acoustics with sweet mellow electric guitar and a good beat...i hope thats whats getting reccommended cuz i will soak the shit out of those releases like a spunge.

you're not looking for acoustic stuff, i think you're looking for that 70s prog rock sound that they tried to duplicate... check out

King Crimson
Camel
Kansas
Maxophone
Il Rovescio Della Medaglia
Celeste
Semiramis
Museo Rosenbach
Quella Vecchia Locanda

I haven't heard most of these, but the first three are so laughably dissimilar to Opeth's acoustic sound (especially Kansas... wtf) that I'm amazed you could just lump Opeth in with them.

edit: And yes, I do realise that Opeth derives much of its sound from various classic rock bands, but I don't think KC, Camel or Kansas are the place to look. To the OP I recommend Nick Drake, since Akerfeldt actually does seem to replicate Drake's vocals, and the music has a similar mood to Damnation.

they don't get it from classic rock its from Prog Rock... Damnation is far from an acoustic album, its in the vein of Camel, some people recognize that parts of the album are directly lifted from Camel... I assumed since he wasn't really sure how to describe it that he was probably referring to the lush soft prog that is present on the album. Furthermore if you get past the fact that Kansas gets played on every classic rock radio station their first 5 albums influenced both progressive rock and progressive metal a great deal.

If we were talking about their acoustic sound on lets say Blackwater Park or Deliverance then i'd agree with you those lack the moog and mellotron synths and lightly distorted/clean guitar tones... Damnation however is densely layered and the OP clearly didn't mean acoustic or he'd have probably said soft/acoustic opeth... he looks to have mentioned the word but stopped himself from typing it out completely due to being unsure of what exactly to call the sound(note the um, and the ?) if you're just recommending stuff based on mood...
Bohren & Der Club of Gore - Black Earth
Lustmord with Robert Rich - Stalker
however i think this has a lot more to do with Damnation
