Opeth guitarist quits.

I have no doubts the albums will still have that unique Opeth feel and quality. But I do believe, for the long time fans, they will not have the same quality during their live performances. Peter had a kind of ethereal stage presence that I doubt anybody else could match.

He was probably my favorite member and will be missed!

Fredrik is awesome, and if given some freedom, he will bring a pleasing sound to the band. Also, the man has some stage energy, thats a plus for Opeth.

Listen to Krux to see what kinda awesome doomy shit this man can play (Granted I'm sure Leif Edling writes bit of it...).

yeah no doubt, Fred can probalby play circles around Peter...however. He's still not Peter, I think the live shows will suffer quite a bit from his loss. Not trying to demean Fredrikk in any way, but Peter had a quality about him especially live. He was unique.

While I agree the new drummer is more straight forward. Also technicaly speaking fredrik is a more technical player but peter was more of an emotional player with well rounded chords. So lets see what mikael makes of this outfit. Seems like kinda oddball choices considering their sound, but mike knows what he's doing.

Peter and Mike both can 'shred' but they dont really put it into many songs. Peter has great phrasing to his lead playing, which is much more important than how fast you can play.

As for stage presence, Peter is awesome. I dont need someone to be jumping up and down and making faces to enjoy their playing, Opeth's not really a band you mosh to anyways.

A little movement every once in a while would be nice. But nope, his feet are fucking planted the entire time, his head shakes maybe once or twice a song, and he just looks down at the ground the rest of the time...

Thats bad stage presence.

Peter's solos (when he actually did solo) aren't really phrased that well, most of them are just arpeggios linked together. He doesn't really use vibrato too much, either.

Mikael, on the other hand, has excellent phrasing.

Well, I can understand why Peter left.
I'm sure touring for 18+ months will shear a few years off your life...
But this still sucks!

At least I saw them twice while they were still "whole" :waah:
