Opeth has no musical theory????

there's this longstanding theory by scientists that music doesn't actually exist. frankly i don't believe it; i hear music all the time. and considering opeth is a band that makes music, i think they disagree with it too

Alright and how the hell in the name of all that is dark and holy is the logic behind this even possible????

Yeah, you could argue that music doesn't exist and it's just sound. You could even argue that sound doesn't exist since we can't completely trust our senses. I am reading about shit like this in my Philosophy class.

it would be extraordinarily cruel and about Opeth....theory doesnt make composer. simple.

not a bad link btw pseudo

Of course Opeth has some knowledge of musical theory. Exactly how much I don't know, but it's probably less than one would guess from listening to their music.

I'm guessing at least one of them, if not all, have a very basic understanding of music theory, such as time signatures etc.. But when asked Mikael didn't know the names of some of the chords he played. Thats probably what people are going on about.

Well.. i remember James Hetfield going on about how Metallica never knew any music theory when writing songs like Master Of Puppets.. although Cliff Burton was meant to have gone to a music college etc...

I don't even know what musical theory is, and I just finished making a 52-minute demo CD today.... and everyone who has heard it has liked it..... and about the chords, Mike just got confused. That chord he couldn't name was probably just an "A" chord.

I have written some guitar music. I like it, i like playing it. But if You ask me about chords/keys and technical stuff like that, i won't have any idea. I've never studied music and i think neither has Mikael. Not that i was implying we're on the same level. You can hear him using words like: "drama", "groovy", "chaos" but never actually going into the theoretical stuff (while dissecting "The Drapery Falls"). You don't need to be well educated to create good music, but it takes a lot of "feel" if You know what i mean.

peter is the only one who is classicaly trained (for 6 months)...they do know music theory...they understand how music works together...they don't follow the classic rules of theory, but, they create there own rules.

You'd be surprised how little bands in the industry know about actual music these days. It's not hard to pick up a guitar and start learning your favorite songs.

A swift kick to the groin will usually disabuse most people of this notion. When they eke out a struggling, "why did you do that?" just respond, "Do what?"

"Kick me in the balls!"

"But I didn't."

"Yes, you did. I just saw you!"

"No, you only think you saw me. So you can't be sure."

"But my balls hurt...really bad!"

"Oh, that's just your imagination."

Rinse. Repeat as necessary.

Even better, do it to your superior at work! I'm sure you will get an automatic raise/promotion for being so smart, so go ahead and try it.
