Opeth in 6/8... more than 4/4?

Is it just me, or does Opeth tend to write in 6/8 far more then they do in 4/4?

I think this is what sets Opeth apart from many other metal bands. To me, 6/8 provides a more unique groove, and most likely enhances the folk aspects of their lighter music.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Yes, there's is a large number of songs set mainly in 6/8 (and other variations). Rhytmically, it's probably the most important thing in their sound.

There are some good songs in 4/4 too, such as Bleak and Blackwater Park, but Opeth wouldn't be Opeth without 6/8.

Yes I agree. Most of their stuff is in 6/8 but they do have some good stuf in 4/4 like Dante mentioned. Lopez had such groove with his 6/8...

Dunno the exact percentage of 3/4, 6/8 compared to 4/4 but there's definitely lots of ternary rhythm structures around in Opeth sound. And that's also an important factor for me. I once noticed that I like those bands more that have at least some 3/4 in their music.

Most swedish bands with the 'gothenburg' sound have some 6/8 variant timing.

i just think of the stereotypical AtG drumming when i think Swedish Metal.
