Well if you burn a mix for someone, you bought the music, if you get it off of Limewire it is not bought, but pirated.

good thing i own all the opeth albums... though i MAY be ripping off a couple of hundred other bands! usually i download a couple of songs then buy the album if i like it though, so i guess im not a HUGE offender.

Well there's someway you can turn off sharing or something and then it isn't considered as illegal.

Well... Even if it's spread on a file sharing program on the internet, usually someone has bought the copy that is then shared. So the only real difference is that it is spread to more people (and usually whole albums are spread, not compilations).

I'm not an expert on US law, especially since I don't live over there... But as I understand it, if you go strictly by the law, it is only legal to make a copy of the music for your own use (backup copy for yourself, copy for using in your car, rip to mp3 for your mp3-player, etc). So making a copy for your friend would actually be illegal, in the strictest sense of the law, since the record company/band is getting no money for it. But then again, the same applies for recording stuff shown on TV to your VCR and as far as I know nobody is enforcing that.

I have myself given friends compilations of music that I like. In most cases they have liked some of the songs and bought the albums. = Great! In some cases they haven't liked the songs, so they haven't bought any albums. = No harm done, since they wouldn't have bought the albums anyway.

So, I'm personally for making a compilation for a friend, but I'm not sure that it's 100% legal to do so.
