Opeth - new album details & US tour coming!!

Controversial, but I love it.

If the artwork is any indication of the direction of the music, expect something completely insane... but different than before.

Didn't Akerfeldt say a few months ago that the new album would NOT be a metal album, but instead a Fusion thing?

I don't know if he ever said it wouldn't be metal. I do recall him saying there would be more influences though, so I would say it's a good bet it won't be one of their heavier efforts.

He did state in the Swedish Rock, or Classic Rock, or whatever that the album would upset the "metal geeks." It seems like he stated in that same interview that it may be "fusion." The cover art is quite awesome and it looks like a departure from the usual Travis Smith fare. Actually, the cover screams 70's prog or 70's "cult" fusion, like Iceberg. I can't wait!

His quote from an interview with Sweden Rock Magazine:

"In the beginning it was meant to be some sort of metal album, but after writing two song I realized I was lying to myself. The classic Opeth elements were there and the fans would have liked it, but I didn't like it at all. This album will be really different to anything we've ever done before and I want to revolt against myself in my style of writing. I don't want this album to be the same as for example Blackwater Park.

Everybody in the band has agreed on a kind of a change of style, this album doesn't sound like anything the band want to release just to keep the name fresh, I recorded a demo tape with the classic metal sound and played it for Mendez and he pretty much said that he'd be disappointed if this would be our next album. The album is very complex and sounds kind of fusion-like and I think that many fans who think they know what we're about will hate it, but I'm sure many people will love it as well. One thing is for sure, no one will find it boring."

Honestly, I think Mikael is pissed off at alot of his fans who are complete pretentious asshats. They bitched about the GoW 3 song not being heavy enough and I remember him saying that he'd write more material like that song in spite of all the haterade. So I seriously think part of it is him wanting to do his own thing, but another part is wanting to piss off the dungeon crawlers who would inevitably cry over anything that doesn't sound like "classic" Opeth.

As for the cover, it's interesting that 5 faces are on the tree when Per Wiberg left the band. They said they will announce the new keyboardist in time, but are drawing it out which makes me think it might be someone well known. My fingers crossed on it being Swanö, especially since "The Throat Of Winter" has a suspiciously Swanö-like Moog part. :D

Being a fan of album art, I absolutely love the new cover. Call me a fanboy, but I am in the school of thought that Opeth can do no wrong!!! I cannot wait for their next masterpiece. :kickass:

It certainly looks like Per Wiberg's face in the bottom right. I wonder if they'll change it to the new keyboardist or take it out completely.

Why would they change it? His head is falling to signify that he's out of the band. There's a mysteriously visible "fifth" fruit that you can't see who it is at the top that probably signify that we're not supposed to know who he is yet.

That cover rules... and it makes sense that other influences creep up in this observation. He mentioned something of the sort in Steve Wilson's documentary Insurgentes. Even metalheads get tired of the same thing all the time.

looks like eleven skulls from those who WERE in the band...one leaving the tree as well.....get it?
